Cynicism is a toxin that rots away the soul. More than most any idea or attitude I've encountered, it kills all the best parts of humanity. It is the very opposite of humility, empathy, and curiosity. It is anti-creative—not just destroying, but salting the fields of creation.

Every year, on November 20th, Transgender Day of Remembrance honors the trans and nonbinary people whose lives were stolen by hate and violence.

As we hold sacred space for Trans Day of Remembrance, we offer this prayer of grief, courage and commitment.

I think e-bikes that are sharing dedicated space with other bikes should probably be limited to the equivalent of making your bike into a tandem with a nearly weightless stoker. An extra 150-250 watts of power is fine.

It's a lot easier to reach my goal of 70 miles per week (Monday to Sunday) on a bike when I ride 10–20 miles every day than when I go into the weekend with only the 11 miles I rode this morning.

I like to carry a lot of stuff with me every day, but I find the whole EDC (everyday carry) thing a bit cringe. I prefer to embrace the Mary Poppins aesthetic over the suburban militia quartermaster vibe. I can't be alone in this; I'm sure there are dozens of us.

Got take from a decade ago that I should probably revisit to see if it holds up: The Old Man and the Sea >> The Great Gatsby.

This was based on the interpretation that both are primarily concerned with inevitable failure in the face of a cruel and harsh world.

If you drive down a neighborhood street with clearly marked signs indicating that there is a school during school hours, and you get stuck behind cars or busses dropping off or picking up kids, that's on you. Honking your damned horn does nothing but indicate your stupidity.

On a dating app profile, a woman listed "fresh manicure" as a simple pleasure, but I read "fresh manure." I won't lie, the smell of horse manure is so associated with positive memories of home that I was about to agree with that as a simple pleasure.

"The bunny, the bunny
Whoa, I love the bunny
I don't love my mom or my dad, just the bunny"
Ironic that many of the parents who worried that their kids would take the wrong message from that song are supporting fascists while many of the kids are standing up against them.

This administration has convinced half the country that the real problem isn’t billionaires who evade taxes and collect government handouts but the working class who pay taxes and get nothing in return.

Thinking back to the year that I chose to read more and chose to not read anything from straight white men (I can listen to my own thoughts if I want a straight white man's ideas). I must say, DEI in my bookcase elevated my reading. Far less mediocrity when you turn down the white noise.

USAID matters. I've often disagreed with their strategy and choices, but their work saves more lives than any philanthropy can. It's a rounding error in the federal budget, and one of the best things we do as a country. To see it destroyed overnight by one unelected man is an unmitigated horror.

Elon musk isn’t elected.

He’s a Nazi nepo baby who breaks everything he touches.

And right now he’s locked himself in a room with grandpa’s Social Security check.
