Sexism isn't just driving support for the radical right — it shaped vote choice across the board in #btw21 🗳🇩🇪

Our new research shows how different forms of sexism influenced sympathy for chancellor candidates and party choice.

(Spoiler: not just the AfD!)

9 candidates for Landratswahl in Landkreis Traunstein in Bavaria — 8 men, and the poster walls make it look like even fewer: the usual Christian, Andreas and Sepp (Heinz and Hans not pictured😆)

Same faces, same vibes.

Austria 🇦🇹 is often in the lower quintile when it comes to support for gender equality measures. Only 26% agree that parental support should be equal between men and women. 😐

#GenderEquality
ps. #Germany not much higher.
Source: ESS round 11. % agreeing to question on equal parental leave. with post-stratification weights.

Thanks for the kind words, it was a pleasure working with you! We needed patience to redraft a few times as the political situation changed.

I wish you many more publications 😸

The new @vdeminstitute.bsky.social report is out... and there is little good news in there for Democracy in 2024. Number of countries autocratizing is increasing. Freedom of expression is deteriorating. I fear the next report is going to be even bleaker. Full report here:
v-dem.net/documents/54...
A set of six bar charts comparing the number of countries experiencing democratic and autocratic changes between 2004 and 2024. The charts use blue bars for 2004 and red/pink bars for 2024.

    Number of countries democratizing:
        2004: 26 countries
        2024: 19 countries (decrease)

    Number of countries autocratizing:
        2004: 12 countries
        2024: 45 countries (increase)

    Freedom of expression deteriorating:
        2004: 7 countries
        2024: 44 countries (increase)

    Freedom of expression improving:
        2004: 29 countries
        2024: 8 countries (decrease)

    Quality of elections deteriorating:
        2004: 10 countries
        2024: 25 countries (increase)

    Quality of elections improving:
        2004: 30 countries
        2024: 10 countries (decrease)

The data suggests a significant decline in democracy-related indicators over the two decades, with more countries experiencing autocratization and fewer seeing improvements in democratic freedoms and election quality.

This week, my seminar on "Women & Politics: Actors, Discourses, Practices" starts. We look at actors such as female MPs and feminist movements, debates on abortion or focus on gendered interactions in parliament and on social media. Looking forward to interesting sessions 1/

Women's representation has been stagnating around 30% for the past 30 years, after peaking at an all-time high of 36.4% in 2013—only to decline since.

32.4% after the 2025 Bundestag election. This is not progress.

If you've ever used the Polity data, read this from Monty Marshall.

tl;dr Polity is coding recent US events as an executive self-coup and an adverse regime change.
