As @jigarshahdc.bsky.social pointed out last week, demand for electricity is spiking even as capacity utilization rates have fallen from ~60% to ~40%. There's plenty of extra capacity for utilities to tap, but it requires shifting load to off peak periods.

Is this moment for distributed energy different?
DERs are finally acting like real power plants. But utilities are still treating them like side projects.

I have been digging into why NJ lost six large electricity generating stations since 2018. I get the partisan talking points, but as an investor, I wanted to understand why the owners shut down these plants.
POLITICO Pro: Jack Ciattarelli says Murphy shut down 6 power plants. Not quite true.
On the campaign trail, Ciattarelli keeps blaming Gov. Phil Murphy and the Democrats for shutting down six power plants during his administration.

What is fascinating here is that NJ is dominated by nuclear and natural gas generation. The fact there was too much nuclear and natural gas generation that drove coal plants out of business is not the fault of "renewables." Coal was shut down by plentiful NatGas.

Chambers Carneys Point Cogen and Logan Generating Plant—Both were coal plants that were no longer competitive. The first Trump administration kept stating it was "infrastructure week" but never found way to get FERC or subsidies to save them.

B.L. England Generating Station—Coal plant that wanted to switch to NG, but even with low-cost gas, they couldn't make the numbers work so in Feb 2019, the station's owner abandoned its plans to convert the facility into a natural gas plant. Could have been saved by the first Trump administration.

Hudson Generating Station—This plant was aging and less efficient compared to modern natural gas facilities. Rising costs and competition from cheaper, cleaner natural gas power made it financially unsustainable. It closed in 2017, also during the first Trump administration.

The old power plant in Jersey City had not run the past seven months, but a couple of weeks ago in the middle of a mini-heat wave, the nearly half-century-old facility got called on one more time.

Let's start with the Oyster Creek Nuclear —its closure in 2018 was mainly due to economic unviability. NY and IL passed a law to keep them open, but NJ and PA did not. The Inflation Reduction Act passed subsidies to keep these plants open, but this plant shut down in 2018 during Trump’s first term.
Inflation Reduction Act Keeps Momentum Building for Nuclear Power
Investments and tax incentives included in IRA guarantee a commitment to nuclear energy.

Pakistan’s solar boom wasn’t planned — it was necessary.
Rising tariffs + unreliable grid = homes & businesses turning to rooftop solar.

Now, a full-blown people-led energy revolution is underway.

I do think that the bold policies pursued/passed by Biden deserve a book by Doris Kearns Goodwin. His bold starting point will be copied and used by the West to diversify supply chains and build long term support for clean energy. I wish he took more credit for it.

Q: "You're administration took a 5% stake in Lithium Americas...When does the administration see it as appropriate to demand equity stakes or revenue streams from American companies?"

Coal power is uneconomic in the market, because its costs have stayed the same while clean energy costs fell. We should invest in coal communities rather than prop up uneconomic plants. Also, they are spending $625 million on this plan. That is TWICE as much as we spend on solar power R&D each year.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

Want to reduce electricity bills 20% by 2030?

Release the data! We have over 37GW of batteries, water heaters, etc that can participate in demand flexibilty. But without data access they can't bid into the PJM/MISO capacity auction to bring down costs.

Smart meters were all the rage in 2009 (aka Advanced Metering Infrastructure, AMI) and even then most of us knew they were unlikely to bring any real benefits for residential customers. Little did we know that Utilities using rickety Oracle and SAP systems would create a crisis. 🧵
