The CFP for Narrative 2026 is out! It's in Aarhus 4-6 June 2026, and they need 300 word abstracts by 1st December. I went last year and really enjoyed it - hoping to convince all my colleagues to come next year :) conferences.au.dk/narrative2026

It doesn't matter if you don't believe in climate change. Your insurer does.

The more extreme climate events and disasters that occur around the world – the higher Australian insurance premiums will be.

Kjedelig men kanskje effektivt?

I don't know, I was at a lecture with Trond Trosterud, who's an expert on indigenous languages and technology, and he said most indigenous languages genuinely have too little written content to train a model. But perhaps there is more "conservative text" than there is South Samí literature.

Media panics. And yes, in "Phaedrus" by Plato, Socrates says "They will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks."

This is not how copyright works. Literally, the opposite. Also, this is legally stupid because it shows they can remove the work. Ergo, they have no defense for including it in the first place.

🚨 New paper alert 🚨 Using LLMs as data annotators, you can produce any scientific result you want. We call this **LLM Hacking**.

Paper: arxiv.org/pdf/2509.08825
We present our new preprint titled "Large Language Model Hacking: Quantifying the Hidden Risks of Using LLMs for Text Annotation".
We quantify LLM hacking risk through systematic replication of 37 diverse computational social science annotation tasks.
For these tasks, we use a combined set of 2,361 realistic hypotheses that researchers might test using these annotations.
Then, we collect 13 million LLM annotations across plausible LLM configurations.
These annotations feed into 1.4 million regressions testing the hypotheses.
For a hypothesis with no true effect (ground truth $p > 0.05$), different LLM configurations yield conflicting conclusions.
Checkmarks indicate correct statistical conclusions matching ground truth; crosses indicate LLM hacking -- incorrect conclusions due to annotation errors.
Across all experiments, LLM hacking occurs in 31-50\% of cases even with highly capable models.
Since minor configuration changes can flip scientific conclusions, from correct to incorrect, LLM hacking can be exploited to present anything as statistically significant.

You sure it wasn’t intentional? Finns speak pretty good English. But they have a very dry sense of humour so not always easy to tell when they’re sarcastic.

From the noted anarchists at the Financial Times. archive.is/2025.09.23-0...
The biggest US-listed companies keep talking about artificial intelligence. But other than the "fear of missing out," few appear to be able to describe how the technology is changing their businesses for the better.
That is the conclusion of a Financial Times analysis of hundreds of corporate filings and executive transcripts at S&P 500 companies last year, providing one of the most comprehensive insights yet into how the Al wave is rippling through American industry.

Matthew McConaughey says he wants a private LLM, fed only with his books, notes, journals, and aspirations, so he can ask it questions and get answers based solely on that information, without any outside influence.

Something about the way LLMs build in the idea that to find something out, you shouldn't read an already existing text that other people have also read (ew!); you should get fresh text generated just for you. Each time, new disposable text.

I think Kurrant’s useful for Anglo students to see because it’s so different - makes you realise how culturally specific handwriting is. Also, lots of us have German ancestors and all the German and Austrian church books with baptisms etc are online and in Kurrant. Accessible but incomprehensible.
