@jonquark @openrightsgroup It is definitely a significant risk, I think the HO eVisa app works like this. And of course, eVisas don’t work except on an app; in both cases the systems will make some people very dependent on relatives or partners who are abusive.

"By investing in #opensource, Europe can support small businesses, universities, and public institutions, giving them tools to compete with global tech giants.

Despite this importance, the budget proposal does not include specific funding for open source… The omission is alarming as Europe […]

@Sunraku Yes - you have to know this tho! It does not say this anywhere on threads.com profiles.

IDK how complicated migrating the domain from https://www.threads.net to https://www.threads.com would be, but not advertising it to users or making any provision for this is dire. #fediverse #threads #meta

So apparently part of the issue with #threads is that they moved domain from threads.net to threads.com with the result that fediverse domain handles are no longer obvious and transparent. Kind of screams neglect and don’t care won’t fix.

According to Politico, the @EUCommission is now close to publishing its final #DSA non-compliance decision against #x. But for real this time, they say. 🍿

Maybe a good moment to re-share what I just published about how #DSA and #dma are going […]

Something that bothers me a lot is when people conflate "having compassion and understanding for people who hate you" with "letting people who hate you do whatever they want to you".

It's possible to have firm boundaries and to take urgent, protective action while also believing that everyone […]

@Ruth_Mottram So true, and the UK's politics of migration are appalling.

The analytic we want is to correlate news coverage / political commentary with what is cited as top concern by the public.

"respect the data, but also look carefully at what you see all around you. Above all, think for yourself."

A moral for the ages.

It’s not hard to see how so many came to worry about the issue. But the data isn’t there

I know, many of you will be unsurprised or even quite happy this is the case, but it is not good. #meta should not get a free pass on this.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, threads.com seems increasingly broken from an #activitypub perspective; subscriptions to external accounts frequently fail, and it is not picking up posts from certain user accounts.

Government appears to have learnt nothing from the #onlinesafetyact debacle, and is planning more of the same. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/online-safety-laws-to-strengthen-to-protect-people-of-all-ages-from-devastating-self-harm-content

Via Owen Boswarva
The government has today (8 September) announced urgent action to
toughen the Online Safety Act by putting stricter legal requirements on tech
companies to hunt down and remove material that encourages or assists
serious self-harm, before it can destroy lives and tear families apart.

While platforms already have to take specific steps to protect children from this dangerous self-harm content, the government recognises that adults battling mental health challenges are equally at risk from exposure to material that could trigger a mental health crisis or worse.

I'd like to publish conference proceedings as epub rather than pdf, as they're more accessible, can include videos etc. They're basically standardised bundles of HTML as far as I can tell, that can be downloaded onto ereaders etc.

However, web browsers can't natively read them, and I somehow […]

@ret 100% especially when you add that the far right are inevitably quite happy to forget FX once they have the power to restrict speech they do not like. We are watching that happen in real time.

@rachel @BBCNews Sure, that is what I meant, sorry!

@BBCNews So much of this relates to the tabloidification of social media. Which is about disempowered users, who cannot choose their moderators and prioritisation engines,

Did a quick interview with @BBCNews on the Graham Linehan arrest. Whatever the specifics with GL, which are not good, there is a wider question as to why the police are dealing with speech offences through arrests. #freespeech #onlinesafetyact
