This is sort of a thing, and I'm kind of proud of myself. The thing: I'm giving the keynote Boyer Lecture this year. Won't mean much to non-Aussies, but it's the leading annual "public intellectual" lecture series in my native Australia, and it means a lot to me.

Academics, writers and policy experts will explore Australia: A Radical Experiment in Democracy across a series of five orations for the 2025 Boyer Lecture series, hosted by its creative director…

Remarkable video to watch. Assignment started and completed in under three and a half minutes.

Thinking of how to safeguard against this, or at least throw up some serious hurdles.

it's wild that R, the ubiquitous statistical computing language, was co-created by a Māori prof (Ross Ihaka) — and yet the vast majority of scientists who use R don't know

American Airlines is gaslighting me. In June, my PHL to BTV flight was canceled. The plane failed its final checks, staff advised us to find our own hotels, keep receipts, etc. I watched maintenance crews working on the plane. Now AA insists it was “weather.” Has anyone else dealt with this?

More good climate news…
renewableenergy.bsky.social
They say it can’t be done, but here we are, California is generated 106% of California’s entire state electricity demand from renewables.

California has a population bigger that 154 other countries around the world. It’s the 4th largest economy, in the world.

Let that sink in.

“One point seems to be lost:

The reason that the federal government funds science is not just to provide scientists or government bureaucrats with jobs…

We fund science because it is in our national interest to do so!”

Whether it’s DARPA creating the original Internet, or an NSF grant funding the origins of Google, or the NIH funding work that led to a miracle cure for a type of leukemia, or NSF funding work that ended up making PCR usable, or Defense research that led to the GPS system that made it possible to have real-time maps on our phones, we all benefit from putting public money towards scientific R&D.

I give quizzes and exams in class and offer no makeups for any reason and it works. For flexibility I drop X number of quizzes. I also give cumulative exams and never change dates so they can plan ahead. In extenuating circumstances they can have the final or next exam count for what was missed.

A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond.

I hope you’ll read and share the piece.

What DEI threatens isn’t merit. It’s monopoly.
Political science professor Hakeem Jefferson argues for DEI's importance to de-monopolizing universities.

If you're a US historian who'd like to do this but are unfamiliar with the process, hit me up & I'll help you identify your target publication, write your pitch, & get your piece into that sweet, sweet 600-750 word range. (Pro bono in case that wasn't clear).

It's my literal job & I'd love to help.

US historians should pitch their local outlets with essays about why this is bullshit.

Anyone have a suggestion for an article that undergrads could understand that explains why positive climate solutions news promotes action while negative news about climate impacts can prompt inaction?
