Scott Brown's defence of the European Convention on Human Rights (#echr) is good but unexceptional. Yet it is a #bbcnews story, because it is this #northnorthamptonshire councillor's reason for leaving the #uk's #conservativeparty […]

The ECHR is not merely an international agreement; it is a cornerstone of civil liberties, enshrining rights that protect individuals from arbitrary state power and ensure justice, fairness, and dignity for all. Its origins trace back to the aftermath of World War II, but its spirit echoes the foundational tenets of British liberty as embodied in the Magna Carta of 1215.

The Magna Carta, often hailed as the bedrock of constitutional governance, established that no one—not even the sovereign—is above the law, limiting executive overreach and guaranteeing due process.

The ECHR builds upon this legacy, adapting these ancient protections to modern challenges and safeguarding the very freedoms that make Britain a beacon of democracy.

A map of Europe titled "Help Stop #ChatControl!" shows countries colored according to their government's stance on ChatControl in 2025. The legend explains: Green stands for "Against", Blue for "Undecided", and Red for "In Favor".

The following countries are in favor (red): Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden.

The following countries are against it (green): Austria, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

The following countries are undecided (blue): Belgium, Greece, Latvia, Romania.

At the bottom is the call to action: "Act now! www.chatcontrol.eu".

@edavies it doesn't make it any less bad IMHO, the Commission could theoretically say any platform is a threat, i don't know how much they would be required to prove it though. I guess it could be challenged in court

@crlamke It was written for policymakers so it had to be! Thanks!

@edavies I don't disagree, but our strategy within the institutions was not to rely on the fundamental rights' argument.

The legal services of both the Council of the EU and Parliament concluded the law would be illegal if it involved mass surveillance.

2. ChatControl wouldn't automatically […]

Who could possibly have foreseen that having random web apps collect copious personal information in order to check for user age could create a golden trove for hackers?

The whitepaper highlights the technical challenges of detection, how easily it can be bypassed, and the potential to create enormous numbers of false positives, which will actually impede the work of law enforcement in finding and detaining abusers.

Side point on #chatcontrol: When I worked on the law in the European Parliament, in the face of questionably legal, and highly problematic behavior by DG HOME, I prepared a whitepaper on why it was such a terrible Idea.

As it is in the public interest, I have decided to make that white paper […]

banning people like antivaxxers and fascists has never been about “censoring the opposition” or “stifling healthy debate.” at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, that’s what they want you to think. it’s always been about limiting the reach of mass disinformation campaigns that seek […]

@tginsider Russia came to the country, bombed, destroyed and occupied it, the forcefully deported the inhabitants.

Even if your statistics weren't a flaming pile of bullshit, the reason is that Russia deported them there at gunpoint.

Yes, by throwing future generations under the bus. That's always how populists work. It'll be heartbreaking if the Czech Republic elects a Russian stooge […]

Europe doesn't have a good solution yet about how to condition the payment of public funds to industry (like startups) to ethical behaviour (like building #opensource, #privacy-preserving, or decentralised tech), says @alexandrageese.

The extent to which the #trump administration has dismantled vital democratic safeguards is terrifying.

If there is ever another free and fair election in the United States, the democrats will have to take unprecedented, radical action to reinstate them, including doing some things they […]

@jon You make a good point. Perhaps acquiring more gauge switching trains would be useful. I hear Renfe has plans, although I'm not sure how realistic those plans are?

As I am making a presentation to European Commission officials tomorrow, and the Commission *loves* the idea of re-gauging railways, I thought it was high time to write up why it's mostly a bad idea

@jon I think I agree for the most part with your perspective. I think the approach of adding standard gauge where relevant is a good one.

My only security concern is that Russia has entire military divisions focussed on repairing railways. You'd have to blow up large segments of track to be […]
