I’m so struck by this video. A regular day in Logan Square in front of a grocery store and ICE pulls up and tear gassed people. Funston Elementary School is right across the street as well. This is a major corridor in Logan Sq. No concern for human safety

G3 warning just posted by NOAA SWPC due to ongoing enhanced conditions (wind speed ~700 km/s and ~10 nT with mostly negative Bz). More substorms are possible tonight with extended auroral visibility to the central U.S. Stay tuned!

To be fair I did leave the lakefront right before a second, stronger substorm emerged 😭

Looks like I spoke to soon! A second substorm hit even better than the first one!

I’m still in disbelief that I was able to catch these 4 magnificent displays over Lake Michigan from within Chicago city limits. You will never get me to stop talking about these moments!

In case any Chicagoans felt FOMO about the northern lights recently, I’ll admit I saw nothing the last 2 nights.

Chicagoans: your alderman can now choose to “opt-in” for more new housing (accessory dwelling units) in their entire ward, like Ald. Fuentes did.

Want more housing in your neighborhood? Call your alderman and tell them to opt in the entire ward ASAP or they’ll lose your vote.
abundanthousingil.bsky.social
Ald. Fuentes plans to "opt in" the entire 26th Ward to allow accessory dwelling units! 🎉

Without opt-in: 31% of 26th Ward allows ADUs
With opt-in: 💯

Thanks to Ald. Fuentes, thousands of additional homeowners in Humboldt Park, Logan Square, and Hermosa will be able to build an ADU as-of-right. 🏘️

we need so many more 26-year-olds like @drakefor10.bsky.social running for public office

“So being technically oriented myself as an engineer and also being a huge extrovert, loving people, loving to learn broadly and understand a lot of different things, this is the best way I feel like I can be of service. So the choice to enter public service came from falling in love with a Chicago, having something that gave me a motivation and a reason to want to serve, to want to be a steward of something bigger than my own life, and then seeing a capacity that I could actually be substantially different from what's been normal in Chicago. So I've gotten involved in volunteering with Abundant Housing Illinois, which is Chicago's awesome chapter of YIMBY Action.”

Seriously, if someone values high pay per hour with only a few years training, job security for 30+ years, the potential to travel at will, and the feeling you’re contributing to a better world, training as an electrician isn’t a bad strategy.

Bummed I missed this substorm last night! Looked like pretty good conditions at the lakefront according to these pictures seen on Twitter
Twitter user @travelerkitty seeing northern lights on Chicago lakefront - there are pillars of red as well as a lower band of green

Take a screenshot of the headline. Use it as the background and stitch together a few clips.

Tips:
-Talk clearly but informally
-use good lighting
-try to keep it under a minute

Bonus:
-include context in the first 10 seconds
-engagement bait is (unfortunately) very effective

I post TikTok videos every few months. I’m not an expert, but I can very confidently say this:

You can almost guarantee over 10k views if you just film yourself summarizing a recent article about a subject you’re passionate about.

The real generational divide is people who refuse to watch a video if it could be an article versus people who refuse to read an article if it could be a video

Any Chicago legislators who are not trying to increase housing production do not deserve to win their next election

When the supply of available homes goes down relative to demand, prices increase. This is one of the best established findings in housing policy, and policymakers who don't center this aren't going to fix the housing crisis.

Trump’s tariffs and inflation are shutting down investment in a new building in Milwaukee, the city that hosted his RNC
The issues don't come down to engineering or construction headaches as one might assume, but instead finances. Developer Neutral has put out a statement explaining that current US tariffs, along with broader inflation issues in the construction industry, have increased costs to the point that it's no longer feasible to continue.

This is a fitting paragraph to end the article with.

Micromanager Marty is forcing homeowners to get his permission if they want to build a granny flat.

Liberty Lawson thinks Chicagoans can make their own decisions about what to build on their property.

Tell your alderman to be like Lawson and legalize ADUs in their whole ward.

Thank you for voting yes! Hope to see you opt in for all of your residential blocks!

I watched as city council voted. The guy behind this specific provision justified it by saying “Chicago is a union town”

I shall henceforth refer to him informally as Micromanager Marty
