Now what is AI about ? Many things but the last generation of models made a breakthrough on analogical think and reasoning , which is the mechanism behind metaphors.

Well it is hard to test because they have seen a lot of text and their training corpora are usually not public. But the models not great at it yet … not as … let’s say creative as a good writer.

Then if you ask models to generate metaphors in context , they might give you very good ones …. That they probably have already seen in their training data somewhere.
How about new metaphors that are really tasty?

Oh I don’t know where to start. First, I like the plastic bag metaphor … the outputs of large commercial models are free to get , lower quality sometimes ( it really depends on what you ask now) but so convenient, with a massive pollution behind.

UCL trialled hours-long surgical procedure to treat disease which causes dementia and paralysis Huntington’s disease, a devastating degenerative illness that runs in families, has been treated successfully for the first time in a breakthrough gene therapy trial. The disease, caused by a single gene defect, steadily kills brain cells leading to dementia, paralysis and ultimately death.
