As a reminder, Trump has the sole, unfettered authority to launch one or one thousand nuclear weapons whenever he wants. We have to grapple with what it means to have 12,000 nuclear weapons in the world controlled by authoritarian regimes — including America’s.

Maybe Senators could have done better in their questioning, but none of them responded with personal attacks. They knew better. It’s not just about one hearing but about a long political process and long careers. They gave her all the rope she needed to hang herself. And she did that beautifully.

To advance anywhere else, she will need bipartisan support. She’ll need the help of the people and party she pilloried. That is, in part, why the Senate observes decorum, why it practices (usually) etiquette, avoids personal attacks. She burned a whole lot of bridges that she can never rebuild.

I’ve made the mistake of personalizing political/policy fights. I’ve personally attacked my opponents. I, too, thought that by bringing them down, I raised myself up. I was wrong. It never worked well. At best, this endears her to the MAGA world maybe leads to a career at Fox or Newsmax. That’s it.
