@mjgault.bsky.social: We have avoided nuclear war because we've been lucky, but also because we've been human... The real danger of nukes at the dawn of AI is that justified by efficiency in the name of modernization, AI will replace the next Stanislov Petrov

some days on this job the "security is a myth, you are not ready" monologue from 'Halt and Catch Fire' plays in my head on a loop

Register to watch live. Why? Because it's being moderated by a guy who knows that the best works of anti-nuclear fiction have all been written by Hideo Kojima
Hot Coldman, a villain from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. "Machines don't make mistakes, only men do. That's why a fully automated, mechanized deterrent like Peace Walker is needed."

SCOOP — Pennsylvania prosecutors were alerted to possible voting irregularities by one of MAGA's leading voices against voter fraud. A long paper trail shows Jack Posobiec has been living in Maryland but voting using his parents' PA address for years.

From @jsweetli.bsky.social, @slate.com + me:

A long paper trail shows that Jack Posobiec casts a ballot in one state and lives in another.

New: Apple just removed ICEBlock, the app for reporting sightings of ICE, from its App Store after DOJ pressure. ICEBlock's developer tells 404 Media "we are determined to fight this."

"Capitulating to an authoritarian regime is never the right move."

I think these IR theories are neat because they all functionally ignore that violence is actually real and you can just kill people in international relations to make them do what you want.

No I am sorry Mr. PhD but a Tomahawk conveys both a message and an actual warhead.

In IR undergrad I had a VERY post-structuralist prof who argued that it was words and construction all the way down. I asked: but do you really think that’s useful to a kid living in war-torn Iraq? He can’t change his own reality. He said “Well, maybe he could” and that was just too Matrix-y to me.

“Okay, so how should we actually formulate policy around the strategic threat of thousands of nuclear weapons pointed at NATO?”

“First of all, using words to concisely convey concepts makes you a bad person, so write that down…”

Sign of the times: @mjgault.bsky.social interviewed ABC's John Quiñones re: his podcast about Vanessa Guillén, a soldier who was murdered at Ft Hood in 2020. When Gault asked how Sec. Def. Pete Hegseth could roll back reforms made in response to Guillén's death, a PR person cut in to shut it down.
Vanessa Guillén and the Importance of Speaking Up
Hey there Angry Planet listeners, Matthew here.

"I don't want current events to cloud what we're trying to do with the podcast," the PR person told me. It can't be avoided. You can't pretend it's not happening.

Vanished is a good show. Guillén's legacy is important. I won't just ignore Hegseth's tarnishing it.
mjgault.bsky.social
In our talk, John mentioned the People First Initiative as one of the many new things brought about by Guillén's death.

In a post-Trump and Hegseth world, the landing page for that is gone.
mjgault.bsky.social
Of all the weird and disturbing things in Hegseth's speech, "No more anonymous complaints. No more repeat complainants" struck me as one of the worst. He's talking about a complete change in the way watchdog complaints are handled, for the worse.
