Netflix documentary #TheNewYorkerat100 is, I’m sorry to say, everything that the magazine isn’t: clumsy, ingratiating, self-conscious, and overeager to please. How do you mess this up?

Jack Davis would’ve turned 101 the other day. Here’s a fun color prelim for one of his many TV Guide covers.

The Running Man, as written in a single week by an angry, broke, chain-smoking twenty-five-year-old Stephen King, really only works in that context. It’s a bitter, unpleasant book, not an action movie.

Amazing writing:

“He was a long gnarled knuckly powerful pale-eyed man with a lazy effortless look of importance.”

The comma-less alliteraterative rhythm of MacDonald’s sentence perfectly mimics how we see the this character.

Re-reading this beast for the first time since 1996. This is *not* Pynchon-esque metafiction or some kind of pretentious DeLillo language sandbox — this shit is real, and about 300 pages in, it starts to break your heart.

The US Attorney General asked for a response by today, so here it is: stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures.
