What’s it like doing fieldwork in Antarctica? 🥶 Sarah Shackleton and @blueicedude.bsky.social from @princeton.edu can answer that.

They just found a 6-million-year-old ice core—a key piece to improve our current climate models!

My story for @eos.org

New Lessons from Old Ice: How We Understand Past (and Future) Heating - Eos
Fragments of blue ice up to 6 million years old—the oldest ever found—offer key insights into Earth’s warming cycles. Researchers are using these ancient data to refine models of our future climate.

It wasn't too far from where I live. Rio Bonito do Iguaçu is a small municipality. Six dead people and over 750 displaced. 90% of the town was destroyed. Our community is devastated.
A tornado🌪️ devastated the city of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, Brazil. The destructive phenomenon completely destroyed several neighborhoods.

Over 83 signatures from polar scientists standing in solidarity with colleagues in the USA and internationally suffering as efforts to increase EDI are systematically eroded.

Email me if you're a polar scientist who'd like to add their name.

November 2024 saw Antarctic sea ice at a record low for this period with 10% below average, while Arctic sea ice was 9% lower. Dive deeper into the full #C3S Climate Bulletin and discover more on these anomalies compared to past decades: climate.copernicus.eu/sea-ice-cove...

🤔 Explained: What is a Glacier Surge?

⏩ Did you know that glaciers can speed up dramatically, sometimes moving 10-100 times faster than their normal flow? This phenomenon is called a glacier surge.

In case you don’t believe the same equations describe motion in the atmosphere and the ocean.
