The Devils Postpile in Devil's Postpile National Monument formed less than 100,000 years ago from a thick basalt lava flow that cooled slowly, creating tall, symmetrical hexagonal columns later shaped and polished by glaciers.

Bikes can do so many more things than most people think. Today’s wonderful example is Carla Cargo’s feature on @mountvernontrail.org’s bike-based volunteer trail maintenance work. www.carlacargo.de/heroes/carla...

Happy garden news of the day: my six year old kōwhai which I grew from a seed finally flowered!

It’s also got our daughter’s placenta in the ground under its roots, so we call it her tree.
A woman holds a child with a mouse emoji face obscuring her real face. The child points towards yellow flowers on a plant, while a blue fence and cloudy sky are in the background.

To my surprise I found a hairy-legs groundsel in the centre of Ōtautahi-Christchurch city today. It's the first time I've seen the species in the centre city.

Hairy-legs groundsel is a new species to the South Island. It was first spotted near some shipping containers in Hillsborough in 2021 by […]

One of the fun things about working in an ecology department at a university is being surrounded by people who are *really, really good* at finding interesting critters.

On Thursday we took our annual first year ecology course field trip to Ōtamahua/Quail Island […]

A photo of a stick insect sitting on an arm. It looks like a brown stick but, no, that's just what it wants you to think. A photo of Jennifer Gillette, Lincoln University's lizard expert. She's smiling and in her hands she's (carefully) holding a brown gecko that she found. A photo of George Gibbs (entomology postgrad student) on the left with a stick insect he found that's sitting on his arm. On the right is Mac, one of our first year ecology undergrads, taking a photo of the stick insect for iNaturalist. This is during our lunch break so in the background there are students sitting in the sun on the grass eating their lunch. A photo of two brown geckos being held in the hands of a trained lizard expert. The geckos are Waitaha geckos, Woodworthia brunnea.

The Mediterranean spurges are in flower at the moment in the gardens of Christchurch, New Zealand.

To me the comical faces on their flowers look more like creatures from the Jim Henson workshop.

(These are both planted and spreading wild, and each October I map […]

A photo of some of the many flowers on an infloresence of Mediterranean spurge, Euphorbia characias. They are greenish yellow flowers with what look like muppet-like faces with two big googly eyes and a yellow tuft of hair and big green nose.

A cartoon from my new book, 'Physics for Cats'. Out next week: www.tomgauld.com
A scientist stands in front of an enormous contraption
"I created this device to test my theory that our entire reality is a simulation, but the readings I'm
getting suggest something much worse"

 "What?" Asks a second scientist.
"We're living in a cartoon!" Says the first.
"Does it at least have a good punchline?" says the second.
The fiorst scientist carefully looks over the data, then eventually replies "Nope"

I had to stop on my bike ride to work this morning to shepherd four paradise shelduck ducklings across a busy road. This was on the outskirts of Halswell in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ.

Thankfully the cars stopped and waited. I'm not sure where Mum was. They seems […]

Why your next car should be an electric cargo bike

Cargo bikes are rewiring cities to adapt their infrastructure for more human-centric transportation. And they’re also really fun to ride.
