On this day--4 Oct.--in 1931, sharp-chinned comic strip cop hero Dick Tracy made his debut in the Detroit Mirror. For 46 years, writer/artist Chester Gould created a gloriously lurid, expressionistic and pathos-filled crime-buster saga, a genuine American classic.

And contrary to the often hysterical critical reactions, it is by no means terrible. In the end, it was what it set out to be: an enjoyable, sometimes somewhat dumb Roger Corman movie. A VERY Corman movie, one that just got way out of hand.

WATERWORLD was one of those movies it became fashionable for critics and the press to bash (the producers had alienated the press during its production). It ended its box-office run with the 10th biggest take of 1995 but it cost so much to make, it took secondary-market sales to put it in the black.
