On this day--4 Oct.--in 1931, sharp-chinned comic strip cop hero Dick Tracy made his debut in the Detroit Mirror. For 46 years, writer/artist Chester Gould created a gloriously lurid, expressionistic and pathos-filled crime-buster saga, a genuine American classic.

A mesmerising Soledad Miranda is the widow out for revenge in Jess Franco's violent slice of cinematic jazz. Visually striking with a cool score. 1970.

Devil's Island Lovers (1973) A young couple is framed for murder after each refusing advances from some very important political figures in this #WIP from Jess Franco. I believe my 77 minute version was short on nudity. #FrancoFriday

Karloff may get top billing, but ramping diabolical to operatic new heights Bela steals it. Hardly Poe but who cares. It's fantastically fiendish fun. 1935.

Great British gothic exploring the origin of evil. Wonderfully moody with echoes of Lovecraft and plenty of Cushing and Lee. Intriguingly eerie. 1973.

Artwork way better than the movie itself.

And contrary to the often hysterical critical reactions, it is by no means terrible. In the end, it was what it set out to be: an enjoyable, sometimes somewhat dumb Roger Corman movie. A VERY Corman movie, one that just got way out of hand.

Waterworld (1995) Original Trailer [FHD]

WATERWORLD was one of those movies it became fashionable for critics and the press to bash (the producers had alienated the press during its production). It ended its box-office run with the 10th biggest take of 1995 but it cost so much to make, it took secondary-market sales to put it in the black.
jriddlecult.bsky.social
When the movie, which Corman had feared would cost over $5 million, finally limped into theaters, its budget had ballooned to $175 million--the most expensive movie ever made up until then.

A key set--a huge artificial atoll that cost $22 million to build--was wiped out by a hurricane because in order to save money, producers hadn't researched Hawaiian weather patterns.
