I like this quote from @bethsawin.bsky.social when I'm feeling this despair. Every positive move has ripple effects.
I happen to believe, as Dr. Elizabeth Sawin has written that: "Because life if self-organizign and regenerating, even the very tiny shifts we make away from harm and towards sustenance of life open up possibilities that compound upon themselves. It's not *just* a park, a food forest, a fair trade organic banana, a pre-school with free breakfast- it's also all the descendants of that one tired butterfly that needed the shrub in the park to lay her eggs. Don't minimize the ripples of the healing work you do just because it starts small and humble." Keep doing your small and humble work and importantly link up with others who are also doing small and humble work. The ripples of that work are what constitutes our movements.

Lake WA Blvd reminds me of Robert Moses's parkways in NYC: where "pleasure driving" for mostly white elites was prioritized over transit or other road users. (Photo is from an exhibit in honor of the publication of "The Power Broker" - the Moses bio).

Analyzing Shapiro's account of the Long Island Bridges, Caro focused on the permanence of Moses's decision making and how his prioritization of "pleasure driving" over mass transit would impact New Yorkers for years fo come. Here Caro plays with words like "foresight,""vision,"and "dream," --terms he previously used to describe Moses's strengths as a reformer -- to show the insidious effects of a policy manifested in steel and concrete. In 1967, Caro surveyed Long Island's beaches, tracing how transportation infrastructure shaped who did and did not use these parks, decades after Moses constructed them.

Someone on here (who generally prefers not to be tagged) quoted @bethsawin.bsky.social (full text in alt text). It's easy to get caught in the gravity well of the vicious cycles, harm compounding upon harm. But there is also a virtuous circle, where the small work we all do makes huge impact.
