This is such a damn good thread and the only thing I think I can add is that it is really whiplash-inducing to see how many formerly centre-left climate-aligned folks have in the past few months leapt to centre-right tech-aligned. Not sure if it's despair, stewing in Musk's X-swamp, or just honesty
One thing 2025 made clear: Durable progress on climate in the US will require structural reform to our corrupted political systems. Otherwise, steps forward will always be vulnerable to the bloody clawbacks we saw this year. A political strategy that doesn't center system reform is not "pragmatic."

I don’t know how I missed this, but every tech person should get this instinctively.

What do we do when network traffic is overwhelming our systems? We block the source.

Shouldn’t cities do the same?
Car traffic is a DDoS attack on cities.

BOYCOTT WALGREEN'S. there are better choices.
After buying it for $18.8 billion, Walgreens' new private equity owner has eliminated paid holidays for all hourly workers on Christmas and New Year's.

Last year, Walgreens had a CEO-to-Worker pay gap of 410 to 1.

Corporate greed that would make even Scrooge blush.

These declines are MASSIVE.

And the comparative silence in media coverage is absolutely DAMNING.

“Why are ppl always so afraid of crime?”

THIS is why. When crime goes up, media trips over itself to report it.

Falls to pre-war (!!) levels? Just CRICKETS.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

I refuse to shut up about this: NYC started charging $9 to bring a car into our most transit-rich zone, the haters & trolls predicted doom, but traffic evaporated instantly and here’s Times Square tonite (even after the holiday tourists have left). For a better future, build transit & price driving!

Yes to all this. It’s hard to engage young people with ideas and possibilities for future careers if they can’t see a way to have a career and they’re not sure there is a future.

The only solution: we resist the path that governments and the super rich have chosen for us.

In any way possible.
The combination of fascism covid more fascism genocide capitulation to fascism and the clear goal of AI tech bros to eradicate the workforce and make all jobs and future goals irrelevant as we all slide into poverty while eleven rich people become gods is really doing a number on us.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Rita Hester was a beautiful soul and a fixture of the Boston queer community who lived large and unapologetically. Her unsolved murder sparked Transgender Day of Remembrance, but her story is often forgotten.

Today, we celebrate her life and continue the work to end violence against trans women.
