How crazy is it that so many people need to be persuaded to care about human rights. I mean, they’re *human rights* and you’re a human. What are you not getting here?

Jewish Journalist Emily Wilder has been detained by the IDF after joining the aid flotilla bound for Gaza. The former Stanford activist and reporter was covering the voyage when israeli forces intercepted the boats and took passengers into custody.

I don’t… but almost feel like I do after seeing documentaries about her. I hope she’s okay. Obviously she 100% knows what she’s doing but it must be terrifying.

JFC, now I’ve seen it all. Labor’s Josh Willie has shared the petition to save affordable arts & screen training in Tasmania on his FB page. Can I help you, Josh Willie? Can I, a lowly arts worker, help you with the this petition that you didn’t write? You’re the Leader of the Opposition! #politas
Screenshot of FB post sharing petition. Post reads: This isn’t just a hit to those pursuing creative careers – it affects every sector.

In the midst of a population and skills crisis, the last thing we can afford to do is cut more pathways for Tasmanians.

Will you sign the petition?

Anything that’s very limited in supply will go that way eventually but it is weird. I assume most would not be in good condition or suitable to really do much with.

A concerning development regarding Madeleine Habib, the Tasmanian/Australian citizen being held by Israel after being taken from the humanitarian vessel the Conscience. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/o...
#politas #auspol
Screen grab from the linked article. Text reads:

Dfat’s report noted Habib did not agree to sign the waiver and said the officials confirmed with Israeli immigration officials that any detainees who refused to sign the waiver would remain in Israel indefinitely.

The officials noted this differed from past experience where detainees would be deported after 72 hours regardless of whether they signed a waiver.

Guardian Australia understands the waiver required detainees to acknowledge they had sought to illegally break Israel’s naval blockade on Gaza. At least one member of the flotilla who did not sign a waiver has been released, sources have said.

This is the correct take.

The Lutruwita Animation Fest, I should say.The animation part is rather important. It's mainly a showcase of new Tasmanian work plus one feature at the end & networking drinks. Should be a nice time. More here: lutaf.org

(and yes, I am helping with it a bit. No one tell Viv I got the name wrong!)

Yes indeed. I wish I could say that overcommmitting is not an essential quality for a career in the arts but...TBF it probably is! You've got to see it as more than a "job" anyway.
brionykidd.bsky.social
Frustrating! But at least it was an assignment and not an actual show! I’ve had that dream where you have to go out on stage in a play that isn’t ready and it’s the worst feeling….. I mean, I’ve had it IRL too and few times but thankfully to a lesser extent. 😆

Well put. People volunteering to try to make the world better are to be considered the enemy. Paid lobbyists trying to make more money for their bosses are doing politics “the right way” (to borrow that Ezra Klein absurdity).

Peter Brook wrote about what he called “the Deadly Theatre” in 1968. By which he meant lifeless. Conforming to expectations. False. He saw cost as a big factor even then. None of this is new. But AI might take us in weird new directions. What is AI art but the most deadly (ie. dead) theatre of all?
brionykidd.bsky.social
The higher the price the more this notion kicks in, I suspect. So the fact that live entertainment is so expensive now is exacerbating the situation. Do artists and arts orgs need to be spending more time on simply explaining what art is about? Ie. Risk is *the point*. Not knowing is *the point.*

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

This is amusing…. but I think indicative of a genuine problem that’s becoming increasingly prevalent in the arts. The notion that buying a theatre ticket is like buying a plane ticket… and that you pay money to be guaranteed a trip to exactly the destination you had in mind….

TFW you paid $1400 to see Beckett’s most famous work without knowing anything about it
One Star Review of Waiting for Godot on Broadway
I recently attended Waiting for Godot on Broadway and spent over $1,400 for two Row C seats (103 and 104). I'm a longtime admirer of Broadway productions and even hold a season pass for Shea's Performing Arts Theatre, so I came in with genuine enthusiasm and high expectations. Unfortunately, this show was unlike anything ! have ever experienced —and not in a good way.
What I encountered was not the artistry, music, or emotional storytelling I usually associate with Broadway, but instead what felt like an endless cycle of nonsensical conversation between characters who seemed trapped in their own madness. I tried-truly tried-to find meaning, symbolism, or even a thread of emotional resonance. I stayed through the first half hoping the second would offer clarity. But by intermission, it was clear: this was a waste of both time and money.
Keanu Reeves is an actor I respect greatly, but I cannot fathom why he would agree to participate in such a disjointed, inaccessible production. His talent was lost in a performance that defied reason rather than provoked insight.
To anyone considering attending: unless you are drawn to highly abstract, nearly incomprehensible theater, I strongly caution you against this show. For the average, educated, thoughtful theatergoer, it is far more frustrating than fulfilling. In my opinion, this was the single most disappointing Broadway experience I've ever had - an unfortunate waste of money and, more importantly, of time.

its actually not true that trans rights are an electoral liability for democrats. republicans who run with transphobia as a central plank of their platforms underperform relative to republicans who dont. its a losing issue for them, but democrats have repeatedly refused to take advantage of it.

Yeah, exactly. If you are not a reasonable landlord, you won’t hear about stuff like that. The tenant is in survival mode.

brionykidd.bsky.social
Yeah, that’s gross. A scratch and a *smell*?! What does he think “wear and tear” even means? So many landlords do repairs with the cheapest possible materials, install the crappiest possible appliances etc - and then are shocked it all doesn’t stay pristine for years.

The Tasmanian case has made it clear to me that the economic arguments are pointless to keep pursuing. They are always there they are very strong here particularly, and the politicians still don't care. So we might as well argue what we really believe are the most important benefits of the arts.

I think that's always the rub for me as arts quals are trashed: the life opportunities that have disappeared, especially for young people. All the paths that could have been taken, now obliterated & rendered down to a choice between shitty job or shitty job by people on a min wage of 250k a year.
brionykidd.bsky.social
Yes, it really is awful. People who would claim that they value and support the arts too, in many cases too. But no clue as to how it develops or what is required to sustain it.
