I knew it was bad, but that is a shocking statistic. We need to do better.
This is a horrific statistic: "One in three women in New Zealand have experienced physical, sexual, or coercive violence
from an intimate partner in their lifetimes. When
psychological abuse is added, it increases to one
in two women (55%)."

Thanks @tepaatimaori.bsky.social for raising awareness of the raft of bills being pushed through this week.

All of these, particularly the Electoral Amendment Bill need much more scrutiny than they are getting.

When you think about this cultural norm informing norms in every other sphere in this country, from pay equity decisions to routinely hounding women/NB folks out of politics, to vast differences in ability to buy a first home, to healthcare access & prioritisation, to inequitable policy… it’s dire.

It’s not okay.
Given the deliberate erosion of norms over the last couple of years, and normalised behaviour which absolutely helps inform our wider culture, it’s more important than ever to say this out loud.
Thanks to those who refuse to normalise it - and to dissent out loud on behalf of others.
Proud to stand with Louisa Wall, Marama Davidson, Rawiri Waititi and Green MPs as we delivered a 30k strong petition calling on the PM to bring his ministers into line. Whether it’s Seymour calling academics “deranged,” or Peters taking cheap shots at anyone who disagrees with him, it’s not ok.

Hello fellow patriots

Did you know that at 3.30pm today the govt is introducing an “undisclosed bill” which, as the title suggests, means no one knows what it is.

The opposition needs to prepare for a bill that they haven’t been told about…can someone tell me how that is democratic?
December 8, 2025 at 11:58 PM
Reflecting that if you’re a government in it for the long term you might want to spend two years or so eroding democratic norms at a blistering pace so that it’s normalised as soon as possible, targeting vulnerable communities, disenfranchising voters and undermining media so no one really notices.

“This is the strongest critique of New Zealand CERD has ever issued. Unlike the 2017 review, which acknowledged progress, this report finds virtually no positive steps on Māori rights or racial equity.”

Pretty clear why the coalition have been so eager to discredit the UN.

Thank you NZ Greens for saying this so clearly.

We should all be worried that he feels it's necessary.

A list of medical associations who oppose the government’s move to ban puberty blockers for adolescents.

The professionals who spoke at the protest, like those listed, were clear: the govt hasn’t acted on the science, or for the care of adolescents, they’ve acted on bigotry, & lives will be lost.

“New Zealand is moving backwards on racial equality, and Māori rights are under serious threat.”

Read this whole article. It would take Olympic-level twisting to deny any of it - and the fact this isn’t front page news across the board absolutely reinforces the point.

Leadership that sees injustice and says “here’s what we’re doing about it” instead of endless reasons for why it can’t be done is really the only kind of leadership we need.

If you’re looking for a lift- and for policy that doesn’t hide bare minimum ideas behind the rhetoric of progress - take a look at the Greens platform.
For me, a timely reminder that we don’t move forward by lowering our expectations, but by affirming that hard things can and should be done.👇

Over the years I've spoken on behalf of the nurses union, or as a nurse at countless protests. Today I spoke at the #BlockTheBan protest in Tamaki in response to our government banning puberty blockers for trans kids. Unlike any other protest I've spoken at, this time I was immediately in tears.

NZ Labour urgently needs to clearly, loudly, and in official writing express their firm support of the trans community.

1 in 3 NZ households rent (and growing.)

Reading this, it’s clear no one trusted the Tenancy Tribunal to address this predatory behaviour, including entering without permission or notice.

There’s much more to do on renter’s rights - luckily the Greens have a plan:
