“Children and teenagers are twice as likely to develop long Covid after a second coronavirus infection as after an initial infection, a large new study has found.”

Great we’ve just confirmed that any NZ teenagers with chronic conditions trying to access government support are out of luck 🫠

1000% this. I have spoken with adults with Long Covid absolutely burnt out and overwhelmed by consistently having to justify being unable to work, let alone find a job, as well as navigate income restrictions because a partner earns “too much” (🙄) - it must be absolutely gruelling for young people.

Glad this is being reported, because that’s absolutely what will happen.

"Rangatahi are going to be even more vulnerable to being put on the streets by their parents when they're already in precarious, vulnerable situations at home.”

Reflecting on how the NZ govt consistently chooses to make someone’s vulnerable situation worse - then justifies it as a normal behaviour.

A kaupapa Māori youth homelessness group says benefit changes will increase whānau stress and push more rangatahi onto the streets.

If they're living on street and beg for food, cops will move them along for vagrancy. NZ Govt is OK w poor 18 - 19YOs dying off.

Fun fact: when you have Long Covid but can’t work you have to go on the Jobseeker benefit because GPs can’t say whether you’ll still have Long Covid in two years - so teens with chronic conditions are now conceivably navigating absolutely debilitating symptoms while also getting zero govt support 👍🫠
Hundreds of teens with a health condition, disability may be cut from Jobseeker benefit
The government is ending Jobseeker payments to 18- and 19 year olds whose parents earn more than $65,000.

This such a cruel and uncaring attitude from our current government.
I don’t know how anyone can support this heartless and ignorant policy in the face of so much evidence to the contrary.
When did we stop investing in and supporting our young people, our future?

Aside from the both sides positioning, also weird there’s no mention of clear motivation for the Summary Offences Amendment Bill to pass, which risks criminalising legitimate protest, is vague/unnecessary, gives wide Police discretion, allows arrest without warning, and could chill free expression.🤔

Why all the sudden noise about protests outside homes?

They want the Summary Offences Amendment Bill to pass, which risks criminalising legitimate protest, is vague/unnecessary, gives wide Police discretion, allows arrest without warning, and could chill free expression.

Wonder why they want that.

Called by the Clerk’s office late morning today to see if I still wanted to speak to my written submission on the Local Govt Amendment Bill. Sure, I said. But the committee is only slated to be hearing oral evidence tomorrow between 9:50am and 1:40pm…

The rightwing government are coordinating their message to escalate political tensions by openly lying about their political opponents and the media is amplifying and aiding that message.

This is a political strategy and is only different from current US fascist strategy as a matter of intensity.

I watched this recently and it’s fascinating to see similar themes play out here - particularly around behaviour which ultimately is a reaction/deliberate response to non-compliance to an agenda, and as you say, complicity in supporting the behaviour.

When they signalled this in the budget we @dpanz.bsky.social raised concern because of the dangerous & detrimental position this also puts disabled, queer, and young adults experiencing abuse in.

Absolutely wild that young *adults* are now forced to be financially tied to parents at 18 & 19yo.
clrenney.bsky.social
#nzpol The government has announced that 18/19 year olds, who live in a household where the parents earn $65,529 or more, can't claim jobseekers support. If both parents work 27 hours on the minimum wage - $634 a week - they will be expected to now financially support their adult offspring. A 🧵

These quotes are both *chef’s kiss*, and should absolutely be the focus of further reporting - our young people are demonstrably looking elsewhere for their bright future, and we should be holding any government to account for policies making that decision a necessity instead of an option.
"I think what a lot of older people don't understand is that young people want to live where there's good social connections, so like in the cities and towns.

"So the rural jobs like horticulture and agriculture aren't that appealing to a lot of young people."

"I'll move to Australia because there's work there. I'll move overseas. That's my plan; after uni, I'm going to move overseas because there's no work here.

"Everyone that I've talked to, their plan is to go overseas. None of us want to stay here."

The lie was so blatant that employers are speaking out. Makes no difference to Luxon who appears happy to lie to NZ at the same time as removing crucial support from young adults based on those lies.

Indeed it is.
For those following along at home, youth unemployment is higher in rural areas (eg Northland) and wildly skewed by ethnicity, eg unemployment rates for Pacific youth est 20%. Our M & P youth deserve better.
Again, we need a conversation abt this.

Worth noting that we only see decent job growth for young kiwis when the economy is running hot - that's when employers give less experienced people a chance.
RBNZ respond to hotness by hiking interest rates to slow the economy down. Youth unemployment is a feature of our economic model, not a bug.

Not all parents are capable of giving care.
Expecting unsafe people to navigate an additional stressor (e.g. financial strain) can absolutely have dire consequences for those who need to be able to leave.
It makes me so angry that there seems to be no real mainstream questioning of the party line.
writagal.bsky.social
As someone who left home well before 20 and who had a caregiver that would have met the current test standards, the reality is these young adults need options, and they need access to a safety net.
As someone who lived that need, I guarantee some are in very unsafe situations - now made much worse.

“Luxon said the government did not want to "send a message to young people" that they could "just drift into welfare and that's it".

There aren’t enough jobs.

Media accepting this propaganda at face value is concerning.
