A myth and/or an outright lie by too many economists and think tanks. #nzpol

Looks like a good time in the news cycle to tackle three big myths 🧵
❌ NZ pension costs are an unsustainable burden ❌
Seriously, no, for lots of reasons.
1. Our current Govt spending on pensions is low compared to most other advanced economies. And... [1/n]
Graph of public pension costs as % of GDP for OECD countries in 2021 (latest data). NZ is lower quartile at around 5.1%. OECD average is 7.8%. Plenty of Euro countries are around 10% or above.

Govt to meet 9% of Jobseeker target by taking teens off benefit
The design of the new Jobseeker policy incentivises parents of unemployed teenagers to work fewer hours, for fear of the teens losing their benefit.

Yup. He's also truly responsible for the occupation at parliament, if we follow the same standards he applies to Chlöe.

If he wants to play this game he is going to lose so badly.
Winston Peters meeting with the people who occupied parliament, set the grounds on fire, threw bricks at police, and intimidated the residents of Thorndon. By his own standards he is explicitly condoning their behaviour.

From Ahmed, to the anonymous $1000 donor (1/3):

I may not know who you are, but I'd like to sincerely thank you for what you've done. I pray that happiness and joy come back to you in your life.

You have overwhelmed me with your generosity, and I want to share this with you...

We live in a Māori nation. Our Parliament should reflect that more. The haka from the public gallery is an appropriate response to a maiden speech. Suspended Parliament only reminds Māori that they are not welcome to be authentically themselves there. #nzpol

#nzpol Of course there would be a haka. It's totally appropriate and normal for there to be a haka after a maiden speech.

Gerry needs to chillax because his blatant racism is showing. 🧐

Nick Mills: Tory Whanau - What a ride; What a disappointment
ON AIR
WELLINGTON

Well, one more day as Mayor for Tory Whanau - the
"accidental mayor," as many have called her - and just like that, her chapter in Wellington politics closes.
What a ride, and what a mess. And, let's be honest, what a disappointment.
From the very beginning, Tory framed her leadership through a lens of identity - "poor me, give me a break, I'm a woman, and I'm new. Mike's Minute: Tory Whanau is the poster child for ineptitude
ON AIR MIKE HOSKING BREAKFAST OPINION
Mike Hosking, Thu, 9 Oct 2025, 10:33am
The Wellington mayor went out, not really in a blaze of glory yesterday, but more a fireball of misery and bitchiness.
Tory Whanau is probably the local body poster child for ineptitude. She's given her bye-bye speech.
She was a shambles. She may still be back, as she is standing in the Mãori ward.

I will never understand people who claim to understand capitalism and profit, and also suggest that "the market" can deliver security or lower costs or whatever.

"The market" will extract as much profit as it can. That's the explicit goal. It's an obligation for management.

Essential services are not suited to "the market" — the objectives of private capital are too misaligned with the nature of the inelastic demand for the services.
