And the cavalier way they brush off concerns about young people. Awful stuff. They pretend to have no idea that sickness benefits and jobseeker benefits were rolled in together by the Key government meaning that a significant subset of people on jobseekers can’t work.

Trust me - from close proximity - for a 19 year old struggling with mental health challenges job-seekers is terrifying but these changes will make things far, far worse for so many of our young people. Imagine extra funding to support 18/19 year olds through this tough time?

Just for clarity, the unemployment numbers under this government may look terrible, but keep in mind, Luxon has driven tens of thousands of Kiwis overseas as well, so its actually far worse. These numbers are just the ones that couldnt leave.

He really is.
I was around when Muldoon was PM, and he was terrible, but I think Luxon has him well beaten in both the ghastly human being and shit PM stakes.

This has been the vicious fucking thing about the "Jobseeker Benefit" ever since Paula Bennett coined it in 2013

In addition to keeping people in poverty it's been a term of propaganda forcing us all to accept the frame of welfare as economic obligation instead of social support

Fucksake. It's quite clear now that they only looked at this benefit policy as political marketing and took no advice on who it would impact – which includes young people with serious health issues and disabilities. Just feckless and cynical. Shame on them. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

the most delightful version of logging on to see what news you've missed
Dr Ramsdell, whose phone had been on airplane mode when the Nobel committee tried to call him, told the BBC's Newshour Programme that his first response when his wife said, "You've won the Nobel prize" was: "I did not."

To which Ms O'Neill replied that she had 200 text messages that suggested he had.

#nzpol The Reserve Bank has cut the official cash rate by 0.5%. That sounds great. But banks only cut interest rates that much when the economy is in trouble - and not when things are going well. This cut is a sign of economic weakness, not strength. A 😄🧵

There are MPs in parliament who have the personal lived experience of being part of the John Key administration that combined the sickness and jobseeker benefits. It ain't ignorance. Even if they aren't listening to advice, they were there on the day in the past.

It was an incredibly moving and powerful moment.
The coalition’s response was everything that’s petty and racist.

Unless they’re words spoken by Chloe Swarbrick - then they’re so violent she gets chucked out of parliament.
The disingenuousness of it all makes me want to yell.
nzjanette.bsky.social
Yes, now that you mention it. It’s one of his tells, like someone who says ‘no offence, but… [appallingly offensive thing].
It’d be interesting to collect up all the things he makes no apology for.
nzjanette.bsky.social
Very much so. He clearly believes that because he struggles to hide his disgust .

I remember that. Just hideously lacking in compassion or empathy. He has a hard time concealing his contempt for poor people and the ill and disabled.

They’re really letting their wannabe authoritarian flag fly this week aren’t they.

In 2022, protestors hurled bricks, faeces at police & lit fires. Winston Peters said those protestors just wanted to be "heard" & shook their hands.

This week Peters called the mostly peaceful, law abiding Kiwis outside his home "gutless, spineless, [the] worst" protestors #nzpol

“Children and teenagers are twice as likely to develop long Covid after a second coronavirus infection as after an initial infection, a large new study has found.”

Great we’ve just confirmed that any NZ teenagers with chronic conditions trying to access government support are out of luck 🫠

The casual brutality of this political circus coupled with 3-5 years of cultural gaslighting will end with the predictable long trailing end of increasingly more disabled people at an increasingly younger age.

No you're not. That's not true. Because we don't have a sickness benefit anymore. Swarbrick should've called him a liar.
Christopher Luxon replied: "When you go on a Jobseeker benefit, you're deemed able and capable of working."
nzjanette.bsky.social
Me too. They don’t know anything about people dealing with illness and disability, or seem to understand how the benefit system they’re overseeing actually works. And they don’t care at all that their ignorance will harm people.
nzjanette.bsky.social
Exactly.
Attending appointments, making phone calls, filling in paperwork would all have been horrendously difficult when I was at my sickest. A job or volunteering or any kind of job training would still be completely beyond me 3 years down the track.

Every day the coalition manages to do a new worst thing.
The wonder is they’re still polling as high as they are.

nzjanette.bsky.social
Their justifications are awful. Kids with cancer and long covid and other illnesses might not be sick in a few years time, but they’re sure as hell not able to work right now.

It was. All of us at my place really enjoyed it.

Fun fact: when you have Long Covid but can’t work you have to go on the Jobseeker benefit because GPs can’t say whether you’ll still have Long Covid in two years - so teens with chronic conditions are now conceivably navigating absolutely debilitating symptoms while also getting zero govt support 👍🫠
