This is fantastic!

The E Tū Fb post did a shout out to one of the cleaners at my work, Mareta, for speaking up on the need for them to be paid the living wage.

Mareta does essential work. If she didn’t do her job properly, the collections would be at risk of damage.

She does amazing work ❤️

GOOD NEWS ALERT 🚨

Today the government relented to pressure from the @livingwageaotearoa.bsky.social and retained the requirement for contracted workers to be paid at least the Living Wage rate in Government Contracts. Around 5,000 workers will likely benefit from this decision

Through pure people power - with workers, faith, and community uniting - the Govt has decided to keep the Living Wage in its procurement guidelines for contracted cleaners, catering workers, and security guards.

Special mention to the many workers who stood up and organised for this win. #NZpol

The decision is a demonstration of the organising power of trade unions, charities, NGO's and the wider Living Wage movement. We should celebrate their victory and the lasting good it will achieve for thousands of households in New Zealand.

It’s clear that someone around the Cabinet Table could see that cutting the wages of some of the lowest paid workers in the country is not a way to build a more prosperous economy, and we should thank them. More of their voice is needed to prevent other harmful reform.

Removing the Living Wage protection in government contracts would likely cost the government additional money in higher welfare payments and other costs. The only beneficiaries of the proposal are the companies that would have been able to slash wages by up to $11,336 a year.

The living wage is set at a level that allows New Zealanders to live a decent life. Decent work and decent wages should be the hallmark of employment in New Zealand. The previous government recognised this by adding it to the guidelines in 2021 procurement.govt.nz/assets/procu...

“Paying the Living Wage on payroll means our cleaners can plan ahead, save, join KiwiSaver, take holidays with their families, and have paid sick days and maternity leave. They do not need to rely on government support. We are a force for change, and we want to inspire other SMEs to join….”

To live a dignified, full life in Aotearoa, a person needs to be paid at least $28.95 an hour. In this local election, your vote can support the living wage in local government.
Visit psa.org.nz/local2025 to find out more about the living wage in local government, and which candidates support it.
The image is a photograph of a Living Wage event in Wellington overlaid with a reddish-brown filter and yellow and white text.
The text reads “VOTE FOR THE LIVING WAGE. VOTE FOR A BETTER FUTURE. People, just like pipes, need to be paid a decent wage. And, just like infrastructure, you get what you pay for. Workers who are not stressing about how they’re going to pay for their kid’s shoes or dog-tired from working a second job, are better workers. Better workers make for better services for local communities – whether that be rubbish collection, running the library, or repairing roads.

4. Ghouls have been wailing, wrongly, about this *forever* - see the excerpt from a UK Parliament debate in 1939 below. Sound familiar?
5. The unpaid work that older people do for their families, each other, and their communities has massive value. We should feel good about their UBI! [4/n]
Excerpt from UK Parliamentary speech records - 1939:
It is hardly necessary to point out to your Lordships how grave would be the effect upon revenue if the number of producers and taxpayers were seriously reduced and the effect upon our national finances owing to the burden of pensions for an older population; and the heavy charge of debt which we are handing on to posterity could hardly be borne by a greatly diminished population. Obvious also is the strategic aspect. The manpower of a nation is an essential element in preserving its position in the world. Germany already has a population of 80,000,000, and in the last six years her population, by the excess of births over deaths, increased by 3,250,000 or 4 per cent. Russia is increasing her numbers by 2,000,000 every year, and Japan is in- Toggle showing location ofColumn 606creasing her population by 1,000,000 every year. We have to consider also the duties of this country from the point of view of the population of the Dominions and the Empire at large. It was the overflow from this country which created the American Colonies, now the United States, helped to create Canada, created Australia and New Zealand, and has largely, of course, established our Colonies and contributed to the growth of South Africa.
