starting to think the way avatar appearing in a headline generates anew a flood of "is there any series with less impact than avatar?" questions *is* the "cultural impact" of avatar
if the thing i'm about to say is untrue i'll take it as proof that the rock i live under is bigger than i thought
but i really think the confusion over 'how is it massively popular if it's never talked about' has everything to do with it not being an extension of a massive line of toys

I think that one of the reasons nerds hate Avatar so much is that it exists and is wildly successful pretty much entirely outside of The Discourse, and so is proof that the Age Of The Geek is not the dominant and enduring cultural epoch they want and believe it to be.
