Yeah, this has always been lurking below the surface with the crypto ideologues, but now they've dropped the pretence of calling themselves libertarians. They're out and proud.

4. Carlos Cordiero deserves a lot of credit for breaking USSF away from the SUM/MLS deal.

Having testimony that states that growing the MLS media deal is a goal of USSF because it grows the USSF share... isn't good for the greater game.

I don't know that MLS went "too early" as he says here, I just think they went too *hard* into the digital world when there was still too much to be determined. They also didn't have an easy time selling it, took the big deal, so how much of this is posthumous CYA spin vs. "we're the first movers"?
At this point, it's not about whether the Apple deal is bad. There are clear upsides and clear downsides.

It's about whether the Apple deal is enough, and whether the sports media world has turned in a direction people didn't expect when the deal was signed.

MLS knows its Apple package needs to reach more people, even if it isn’t putting more games on TV yet
The league’s executive vice president of media Seth Bacon spoke with The Inquirer about why MLS and Apple suddenly made big moves this offseason to expand distribution of their games.

"The USL also operates differently than MLS. USL owners run teams as separate businesses, whereas MLS utilizes a single-entity system in which team owners are partners in the league business."

USL fans who folllow international ⚽️ will never support a single entity biz so a merger w/ the MLS is out
If USL does succeed in getting a D1 sanction for its new league and American sports league precedent holds to form, the eventual result of competition between MLS and the new USL league would be a merger (a la NFL/AFL, NBA/ABA, AL/NL, NHL/WHA)

Federal subsidies shield states with poor policies from facing the consequences of poor governance. Lawmakers from these states often export their poor policy-making to the national stage, affecting the entire country.

Here’s how to address that:

Guaranteeing the worst teams in MLS, with the worst fan bases, the least amount of care for winning... host Open Cup games isn't a good look for the competition.

This is DESIGNED to "prove" the Open Cup is "poorly ran" and "nobody cares" ... oh well.

More of the same from MLS.
Only MLS teams that were not in any other cup competitions were allowed to be home teams in the Round of 32. That was a pool of 9 teams, 5 from the east, 4 from the west. New England was not seeded from that east group

What this effectively did was give home games to worse performing teams from '24

Behind this move was the Premier League taking things in house thus dropping IMG. IMG is reorganizing. MLS uses IMG and is following them to WWE HQ.

MLS should have figured out how to do it in house 10 years ago.
