The neat thing about the ultra-viral Czech beaver dam story is that it’s just a particularly vivid example of what legions of unsung beavers do every day — help us solve our environmental problems without our gratitude or acknowledgment, and in spite of our attempts to kill them! Beavers gonna beav.

imagine if a family of beavers randomly showed up right now and finished whatever thing you've been putting off
In early 2025, beaver activity in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic, contributed to the restoration of a wetland ecosystem. A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that coincidentally accomplished environmental goals of the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million,

Out today—a new interactive I worked on with @compatibilism.bsky.social mapping lead pipes in Chicago. You can use this tool to check any water service line in the city for lead, and explore how lead exposure overlaps with race and class. Check out the full piece: grist.org/accountabili...

We got big project out today about Chicago’s lead pipes. The news is we mapped them all. The big idea is that Chicago residents are living through a public health crisis, and we wanted to help them visualize their place in it.

Chicago has most the lead pipes in the country.

A team of excellent reporters and I mapped them all on a searchable tool.

Huge s/o to @juanpab.bsky.social @keertigopal.bsky.social @peteraldhous.com and @compatibilism.bsky.social for this monumental effort. Relevant links threaded below!
Screengrab of the interactive tool that says: Chicago: Does your water service line contain lead?

Also, the series isn't over yet! Stay tuned

It took months of work across four newsrooms to get this out, and I’m thrilled get to share it. Please give it a read and check your address on our lookup tool (undergirded by more thank 10k lines of code)!

I say this all the time, but it's local NPR affiliates that are nearly single-handedly covering disaster recoveries in the long term. If you can support yours, you should!

Someone just asked why we're buying apple juice from China when we have apple surpluses here sometimes. In addition to not having the processing infrastructure, if we were to try and replace the apple juice we import (~430 million gallons) we'd need to grow an additional 15 billion apples per year.
