we're at the point with Yamal where he's clearly the best 17 year old in men's soccer ever, at least in the modern era, and I'm wondering if there's anyone else in modern men's sports broadly who compares

the part where we're just expected to keep working through all this shit is pretty wild?

(tbc, not a complaint specifically about my employer, but more the general vibe)

if you haven't learned about the imperial boomerang today's as good a day as any
Twenty years later, Guantánamo is everywhere. The lawless and ongoing administration of the prison there has metastasized throughout U.S. legal and political culture and underwrites the broader democratic crisis we face today.

I want to make it clear that Biden’s expansion of the detention facilities in the U.S., as well as Obamas bullshit with Guantanamo, made this possible. When you see so many people yelling that liberal policy leads to fascism, this is what we mean.
Trump: Today I'm also signing an executive order to instruct the departments of defense and homeland security to begin preparing the 30,000 person migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay

again going to my bench of favorite complaints: it is weird how openly predatory US culture is and it would be good to have a government that feels some semblance of responsibility for people's wellbeing

The most directly I've seen the "imperial boomerang" spelled out
Bleak.

“Why did I personally do it now? I needed to cleanse my mind of the brothers I’ve lost and relieve myself of the burden of the lives I took,” Sergeant Livelsberger said in one of the notes, according to the police.

"... a more careful look suggests that there is something to voters’ perception that they are worse-off economically. Although wages have more than kept pace with inflation, especially at the bottom, wages are not the only source of income."

Harris Lost on the Economy. Don’t Blame the Voters for It.
It wasn’t just inflation. There’s a good reason so many people decided they didn’t feel better off during the 2024 election, J.W. Mason writes in a guest commentary.

Trump riding a global wave of anti inflation sentiment to power then immediately imposing tariffs on every consumer good in America to fund income tax cuts would be... like... beyond jokerification. There are no words.

I am respectfully tapping the "support independent, worker led local media" sign once more
This is an incredible testament to the loss of local news coverage. A congresswoman disappeared for six months and no one noticed.
A U.S. Congresswoman disappeared for the last six months of her term. Nobody noticed.

Turns out she's in a memory care unit, & her staff (and apparently other people?) covered it up (though she was somehow propped up for an event a month ago?)
