The Ravens behaved differently today. Thought I wasn’t going to see them but they flew above me & sat in trees, doing the water droplet call ( hope you can hear it in the video) at the end of my walk. They came down briefly but did seem nervous today maybe because of the wind.

Cotterite is an exceedingly rare form of quartz known from one Irish locality in Co. Cork. I was privileged to be present when Ben (7) brought it into the museum @nmireland.bsky.social Full story just published in Irish Naturalists’ Journal @injournal.bsky.social

Within seconds of handing it over to an expert, it was clear quartz discovery was very special

I recall it was a windy day in June when I noticed these young Say’s Phoebes huddled beneath my Colorado hotel window.

“Born from Pain”
Some days, there are no words, only grief, shock & a heaviness that sits in the body. Yesterday’s violence in Minneapolis has left many of us reeling. I’m holding space for that sorrow. This piece was created understanding that pain doesn’t disappear simply because we wish it away.

In eastern Asia, cranes are considered auspicious, so I'll start 2026 with an image of sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis). These ones were foraging in stubble at the Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl Complex in Socorro County, N.M. on New Year's Day.
