Introduction: Camp memories
in Africa and beyond
Jochen Lingelbach
University of Bayreuth, Germany

Abstract
Introducing the special issue on the memorialization of camps in Africa and beyond, this text discusses key
questions of memory studies and the global history of encampment. Whatever their purpose, all camps
are meant to be exceptional, transitory and temporary. Camps are often connected to contested histories
and memorialization efforts by former inmates or others can lead to controversies and struggles over its
interpretation. Building on a range of empirical examples from Africa and beyond, dealing with camps ranging
from the most coercive to the benevolent and from the beginning of the twentieth century until today, this
special issue invites a comparative, globally entangled and actor-centred view on camp memorialization.

🔍 The dataset was researched by Johanna Lerchner (MA student, Institute for Contemporary History). Geocoding and cartographic visualization were carried out by Konstantin Schischka (University of Vienna), Martin Mosser (Wien Museum), and Julian Traut (Vienna City and State Archives/WSTLA).

🗺️ The map visualizes Vienna’s post-1954 borders, featuring Allied occupation zones and key locations used by the occupying forces—ranging from administrative offices and residences to cinemas and nightclubs. Clicking on a marker reveals historical details about each site.

Firaxis—the studio behind the Civilization series—is hiring a historian. An *actual* historian.

And note, when they ask for "4+ years as a Writer, Narrative Designer, or other position with commensurate duties," that includes teaching, writing, and research—i.e. your Ph.D. in History.

Für eine ungewiss lange Zeit ist das mein letzter Blogbeitrag. Dafür habe ich hier noch einmal ein kleines Schmankerl an DP-Geschichte - zu russischsprachigen Antikommunisten und Hawaii! Danke an @lenachristoph.bsky.social vakantio.de/mitgeschicht...
Was antikommunistische "Russen" in Südostasien mit Hawaii zu tun haben
Es ist komplex und ja, auch das ist DP-Geschichte.
