Last week I met with some incredibly brave migrant domestic workers supported by @kalayaan.org.uk about the need for rights to challenge abuse and prevent exploitation - sadly happening in homes where you would not expect it, including in Kensington & Bayswater. 🧡

Thank you to @joepowell.bsky.social‬ for stopping by and talking to migrant domestic workers today about the need for rights to challenge abuse and prevent exploitation. We look forward to working with your office! 👏

Our thanks to Special Rapporteur Siobhán Mullally & UN colleagues for inviting us to attend today & speak to some of the issues the UK is battling with. It remains a difficult time for those working in the migration field, supporting those who have experienced workplace abuse. Our work continues.. 🇺🇳

Today’s a big day for us! We'll shortly be speaking at the United Nations in Geneva for the Human Rights Council 59th Session, discussing migrant domestic workers & trafficking in persons, following Special Rapporteur Siobhán Mullally’s report out earlier this year: docs.un.org/en/A/HRC/59/56

Powerful footage from @itvnews.bsky.social shows exploitation suffered by migrant domestic workers inLondon due to the terms of their visa. Thanks to Ronke Phillips for highlighting scale of injustice & Helena Kennedy for explaining how amendments to Govts Borders Bill would create much neededchange

Great to be at House of Lords today for #DomesticWorkersDay. Migrants who enter legally for work often face illegal exploitative employment with no path to identity recognition. Lord German's amendment on right to work is crucial - we need government to show humanity and care.

Julieta: We, domestic workers should not have to wait until our work conditions amount to trafficking or slavery before the Govt takes action. Prevention is key. We ask the Govt to protect all domestic workers & allow us to extend our visa more than 6m

Precy: I want to start my story with a demand. Fix the Overseas Domestic Worker visa. Workers like me should be allowed to renew our visa. It’s impossible to find the courage to escape an abusive employer and find a new one in less than 6 months.

Patience: We are mothers who take care of other people’s children and homes, while we leave ours behind. We need to bond with our own children and our family.

Analisa: I hope you understand that domestic workers are human beings. The UK Government must ratify ILO Convention 189 and recognise domestic work as decent work. We are not robots. We are not slaves.

Dolores: I want people to understand. Domestic workers are not disposable. We are mothers, women, survivors. We deserve systems that protect us, not trap us.

A must read from Marissa Begonia, leader and advocate at The Voice of Domestic Workers. This #InternationalDomesticWorkersDay we don't want to hear empty words or praise. We want change. We want Labour to stick to its promise to fix the visa and guarantee safety for all migrant domestic workers.

Domestic workers in the UK face exploitation under restrictive visa rules. Marissa Begonia calls for urgent reform to protect their rights.
If Labour really wants to protect women, it must restore domestic workers' rights
