A very old Soviet joke, from an especially dark time:

Foxes are fleeing the USSR in droves.
Q: Why are you running away?
Fox: The Soviets passed a new law that they’re going to arrest all camels.
Q: But you’re foxes!
Fox: Yeah, why don’t *you* try proving to the NKVD that you’re not a camel.
If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

Just so we're clear, there is no such thing as a "free world", and Trump is sure as hell not the leader of this non-existant thing.

Trump is NOT "embarrassing" for America. Trump IS America.

Reading how "embarrassed" some (a minority, to be precise) Americans are by Trump only puts the focus on the feelings of some white men far away. I don't care how an American feels, I care what America has done and is doing to the world.

One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.
This isn’t some rant saying “Germany has learned nothing from its past” - the reality is more subtle than that. Middle-class Germans live and travel with an incredible amount of ease and comfort, and they just got…sleepy. Many of them dismissed the far-right’s rage as just another set of complaints.
Just filed an article about the upcoming German elections (out on Sunday) and what strikes me is how timid much of the institutional pushback against the far-right has been. Some people have distinguished themselves but for the most part it’s just been really complacent - really disappointing.

There’s long been a thread among the far right / wht. supremacists of admiring the Serb ethno-nationalist project and buying into its clash of civilizations framing: Breivik, the NZ shooter, the “ironic” remove kebab memes. Now those fringe racists and internet trolls run the U.S. executive branch.

One of the main reasons for the mess we're is the fact that we stopped acknowledging that evil exists, evil people exist. We keep beeing perplexed by actions that can be perfectly explained by someone being evil.
i don’t understand how, psychologically, a person gets to a place where they interpret sign language as some kind of attack or imposition on their life. like, what the fuck is wrong with you?

We need a new word for what Israel is doing. These are some unprecedented, new levels of evil. Our words, our laws could not foresee such evil. We need to create new ones before we can even start talking about justice.
"To me, no legal concept or criminal offence can fully fathom the horrors of Gaza. It is more than genocide—it’s gleeful killing without restraint."

Interesting.
This is something that i remember being talked about a lot as a child who grew up in/near more rural areas as far back as the 80s. Whenever a Walmart would open near or around small towns they’d suck the life out of them like a vampire no matter what region or stage. Every single time without fail
"Walmart makes the places it operates in poorer than they would be if it had never shown up at all. Sometimes consumer prices are an incomplete, even misleading, signal of economic well-being."

Fascinating studies on the broader effects of Walmart:

It blows my mind that "since our species was established around 300,000 years ago, 97% of its history has developed in egalitarian and democratic communities." onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Liberalism (and by further digging actually enlightenment) had us all thinking we can always change something if we identify its causes. Seems like we reached the limit on that, whether it's medicine or mental health or why people vote for fascism.

Laughing at my naive expectations from my new social media usage when I know full well it will be more like:
Fuck fascism, fuck racism, fuck islamophobia, fuck antisemitism, fuck queerphobia, fuck genocide denial.
Oh well.
