The diaries of the Minnesota school shooter go for over 250 pages. I've spent the last few days reading them. The writing is full of self-hatred, detailed planning, and obsessions with inflicting pain & suffering.

"All presidents have the authority ...to declare a national emergency ... But Mr. Trump has already invoked this power much more frequently than his predecessors and, experts say, for situations that do not qualify as true emergencies." www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

They'll go where they can make money.

"After making fortunes hauling oil, gas and metals around the world, the traders are turning to opportunities buying, storing and selling energy back into grids. In Europe capacity is set to rise sevenfold by 2030."

The @nytimes.com just posted an updated version of their detailed map of the 2024 election results, with the data available for download. This is invaluable in part because funding constraints have slowed down academic efforts at releasing precinct-level results. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

USA TODAY reporters called Social Security's 1-800 line multiple times over several days and found the wait times to be consistently over an hour. Multiple times they did not reach a live person before the line disconnected with no warning.

The Social Security Administration is providing less information about caller wait times. Critics complain it's misleading the public.

RIP Rod Nordland, one of our generation's most extraordinary foreign correspondents. For 40 years, if there was a war or conflict or crisis anywhere around the world, Rod was likely to be there reporting the hell out of it. An inspiration to so many of us. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/22/b...

A sad day for @washingtonpost readers as the standalone Metro section in print is eliminated and folded behind Style. As a lifelong Washingtonian and veteran of the Metro staff, I always admired the Post's commitment to covering Washington as a community not just a capital.

What was the 1980s like? Well, there was a buff Australian man who starred in commercials for batteries where he just shouted “oi” and on the basis of that, he got a network series where he drove around in a big custom truck and solved crimes.

He's unnerved but hopes it'll backfire, saying most people take no "pleasure in cruelty"
