Mid-September a new #BioSmoke campaign in Spain kicked off 🇪🇸. Julia Olbrich collected pyrophyte leaf samples, while Kai Weber (@kai-jwd.bsky.social) ran vegetation surveys and drone-based LiDAR & hyperspectral imaging in a region with high wildfire risk near Albacete (Castilla-La Mancha).

RIP Jane Goodall (1934-2025)
🌸❤️🌸
One of the few visible women of my childhood.

In 1962 she had no degree and became only the 8th female PhD student at University of Cambridge.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jane Goodall.

Jane was a much-loved member of the conservation community in Cambridge and worldwide. She completed her PhD at @darwincollegecam.bsky.social and was an Honorary Fellow at @newnhamcollege.bsky.social.

New #GreenToGrey analysis includes land of any size, where #EEA excludes areas <50,000 sq metres.

BUT many little areas add up!
“resulting in estimates 1.5 times larger than the EEA’s calculations”

Let’s help them expand this analysis globally visit greentogrey.eu

🌿 Day 1 of #iDivConference2025 at @unihalle.bsky.social brought blue skies, warm connections and a keynote by @miguelbaraujo.bsky.social on modelling biodiversity under climate change.

📍Tomorrow's keynote by Meredith C. Schuman is on genetic and functional diversity.

More to come! ☀️

My latest cartoon for @theguardian.com books.
p.s. I have a new book of cartoons out soon: www.tomgauld.com/comic-books-v2
Panel One:
A woman sits in a chair reading happily in a book-filled room.
 A voice offstage says
"You can't survive on books alone"
The woman replies
"Maybe I can!"

Panel Two:
"How?" asks the voice
"I don't know yet, but I'm sure the answer will be in one of my books." Says the woman

Panel Three:
Caption: However
The book is filled with yet more books.
A skull sits on the chair. It says
"I regret nothing!"

A PR company working for Colossal Biosciences is sending AI generated pieces to respected science journalists & asking them to publish the articles under their own names. This is so dodgy & just goes to show our critical expert scientific commentary is working. Sci comm failure 101 for Colossal.
lauriewinkless.bsky.social
Just got a 🧪pitch from a PR claiming to work with Colossal (de-extinction chancers). It was a pre-written article claiming the science sector is carrying out "coordinated attacks" on the co. Spy the headline. They asked if I'd publish it on my Forbes column.

Not enough eye rolls on Earth for this 🙄
Is Colossal a threat to Science or Is it Science's Last Hope for the Next Generation?
