For context the yellow and blue stripes in the middle are my added data, the rest is normal operation (vertical striped areas are uninitialized)

More handwritten assembly shoving bit values into CPU-reachable area that shows up in the debug view (and invalidating the cache etc...) has let me check a few individual values I was concerned about. I think I've pretty much got it!

I had taken a guess at which pin was the uart output but was completely wrong... for some reason it's shared with a VGA green bit so I need to wait for the black screen at the end (or find/make a screen-clear shader) before it becomes useful. Once I do that though, I can get a second dump & compare.

Right now I wouldn't even pay $80 for it. Projects and Christmas have not left any wiggle room for casual domain purchases.

Not totally destroyed but would need fine soldering to fix it. It would have been soldered to that row of pads at the top, with adhesive just for reinforcement. To fix it you'd have to resolder it very carefully.

There's plenty of space in that plug for a couple MAX232s or equivalent btw and those cost a few cents each. It would cost so little extra to make this into a properly designed functional product.
