I was so excited to celebrate It's Not a Bloody Trend's birthday this morning, only to discover that it was actually...yesterday. Anyway, my book on (you'll be shocked to hear) ADHD is one today!

Oh my word – of ALL the authors Badenoch claims to love and to have read, she's chosen Terry Pratchett? To which I must turn to @rmcunliffe.bsky.social and this excellent piece asking: has she actually *read him*? www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk-...
It’s not just that Badenoch would be quick to decry a magical university full of wizards messing around with space and time as “woke” and dismiss the orangutan as a DEI hire. If there’s one theme that runs throughout Pratchett’s work, it is an inherent distrust of people who think they know better, who are arrogant enough to assume they have the answers which have evaded lesser mortals. Whether aristocratic snobs attempting to bring down the monarchy, headstrong would-be witches thinking they can harness demonic forces, or generals sending troops out to die for a cause no one can remember, Pratchett’s antagonists are consumed by a misguided self-belief which blinds them to the corrosive effect of power.

Abolishing stamp duty would put a £24.5 billion a year black hole in Government finances by 2030, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility

the tories will not abolish stamp duty lol. this country would collapse. it needs more reform but property taxes are so important for tax revenue. as for shrinking the civil service, please note that the civil service grew since Brexit because 80,000+ people had to be hired to deliver brexit lol

Badenoch's loathing of English degrees makes sense. She shows all the empathy of someone who hasn't read a novel since school.

Badenoch's brain should be studied. Visibly believes that she has put the hours in working while all her policy suggestions are just obviously picked up on Twitter without any critical thought before they end up as policy. Visibly confused as to who was in office 2010 to 2024.

"while we were arguing about what a woman is, china was building five nuclear reactors"

Yes but that is very explicitly your fault, more than most, kemi.

She's such a strange perception of herself

After listening to Badenoch's speech, I am hereby banning all women from saying they have imposter syndrome. I have rarely heard so much blind self-confidence with so little to back it up. Inspiring!

I have no idea what bionic text is, but what I do know is that I’m reading this book at the moment, and as someone diagnosed with ADHD in April, this is a fantastic, informative and funny read that will teach you more about the ADHD brain.

The beautiful blue and gold cover for my book It's Not A Bloody Trend: Understanding Life as an ADHD Adult. At the top, there's a quote from Bryony Gordon: "An incisive, brilliantly written and - above all - deeply comforting book."

Vale JC and AC - may all the dogs and Champagne in heaven greet you both.
Jilly’s writing was revolutionary without her even meaning it to be: Jilly wrote what she saw. To my generation, going through school under Section 28, Jilly’s novels brought us gay and lesbian characters that were as fully realised and flawed as anyone, rather than being The Only Gay In The Novel. Her books were filled with dyslexic characters, or those who hadn’t been any good at school but had flourished anyway. The only “bad” characters lacked imagination, were snobs, or didn’t like animals: a good rule for life.
One of our book club, Andrea Colvile, died of a rare liver disease two years after our first visit to Bisley; her mother said to me, on hearing the news of Jilly’s death: “I’m sure Andrea will greet her, two glasses of champagne in hand.” Oh, how I hope so. And with all Jilly’s animals running along in tow: a life well lived – and even more loved.

By me on the sheer joy of finding my fellow Jilly readers and obsessively swapping encyclopaedic knowledge of her brilliant writing - and then, on top of that, being invited to lunches. What a woman. How lucky we were to have her. www.independent.co.uk/voices/jilly...

Exactly this!! She does social observation and character so brilliantly, and for every dismissive wanker banging on about her huge cast lists, you get the same wanker reverently keeping up with those two.

Thank you, she was such a legend for so many reasons

If you want something with the depth of research and the gossipy quality of Rivals, then try Appassionata, which is her book about an orchestra. She went on tour with one for it for ages and it shows. Huge fun.

You can work your way through - Polo comes immediately after and is very satisfying! If you want something shorter, the Lisa & Co stories are great, or Emily, Prudence, Harriet all have v similar character sketches/ traits that pop up again in Rivals. Also, her journalism collections are BRILLIANT.

By me for the Tel: Five books if you’ve been under a rock and never encountered Jilly Cooper before (such deliciousness in store for you) - and a bit on how she was loved. www.telegraph.co.uk/books/author...
We went to lunch with her again this June. Even though we had been before, it felt like both a first and a final visit. Everything was said. My dog (invited) was cuddled. We had a group photo with the giant smiling cut-out of Alex Hassall, who plays her hero Rupert Campbell-Black in the brilliant Disney+ series Rivals. Jilly understood how much we loved and admired her. I dedicated one of my books to her, for her bold and still-unmatched generosity in giving her own infertility story to her lead characters. She was brave, bold and unparalleled – and oh, how she was loved.

I adore this. When I read Rob's intro to ALIF detailing this story, I wrote back to his PR to say this was the second JC/TP interaction I knew of after The Jillies v The Morporkians on Only Connect! And that was how I ended up being invited to host some events for Rob on that book tour.

GNU Jilly Cooper. Jilly and dad were friends and the only person I’ve known to call him ‘Tel’. Hope they’re both having a big drink somewhere.
