When you could code silly quizzes on Facebook, it was FULL of "what would you be in medieval times?!" etc.

I made one that nearly always answered "died as a child", "died in childbirth", "lived and died as a servant"

People got SUPER mad with it.

Everyone assumes they'll be at the top of the tree

The subtext of ‘we should be more like Dubai’, beyond the obvious racism, is ‘I should have a servant’.

I'm very much enjoying this book I'm currently reading. It has a young boy with magical powers he knew nothing about, being taken away from his dull life in suburbia after accidentally creating mayhem by casting spells.

Marmaduke, six, is reported to have been the subject of near constant vocal stimming by Ellie Mulligan, 32. In response, Marmaduke concealed a microphone within his floofy orange trousers, and he is now rich beyond his wildest dreams.

feels like yet again time to mention that the *videogames* industry (that's a creative industry, which people do creative degrees in) brings in more than twice the amount to the British economy as the fishing and steel industries *combined*

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Good to see organic enthusiasm from absolutely real people in the deadline comments section.
Two suspiciously similarly worded favourable comments, ostensibly from different users, on a Deadline story about Disney signing a big deal to adapt some fantasy books.

It's the usual "if this goes wrong, it'll be because comms didn't get the words right" flannel as well. Usually combined with refusing to actually listen to comms when they* say to take the Ronseal approach.**

*me, I mean me.
** it does exactly what it says on the tin.

I remember it being dreadful in the 1970s, though, as there was no windbreak offered by anything.

It's all "stuff I've written" reposts today. I've been muttering about Plymouth again.

The FREE round-up newsletter is out now!

I've some notes about Plymouth's 'new town' that will overlay the interwar and postwar modernism. Also a seaside theatre at risk in Dorset and a very nice place for sale in Torbay.
Plymouth 'new town' and news round-up (7 Oct 2025)
Plymouth's 'new town' will interact with both the interwar and postwar city. Plus news about a theatre in Dorset, and some very expensive houses for sale.

Heseltine was the biggest of the big beasts and was always a good media player.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.
