Scifi Horror & Military/Space Marines are very popular. Also Scifi Romance (but then, all Romance categories are big.) Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey protagonist is almost a requirement. Grimdark has spread - violent amoral dystopian. But the universe is bigger, and I've been reading hopepunk.
From 2025 to 2026 – Is This a Trend in Science Fiction?
Kate says... Scifi Horror and Military/Space Marines are very popular, and also Scifi Romance (but then, all Romance categories are big.) Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey concept of the protagonist is almost a requirement. Grimdark has spread - violent amoral dystopian. But the universe is bigger, and I've been reading hopepunk. The aesthetic of hopepunk is generally agreed to incorporate a mood of gentleness or softness and a sense of self-awareness of weaponized optimism, with a worldview that fighting for positive social systems is a worthwhile fight.

Any retailers here? When your ad pops up over the article I'm reading, I'm tolerant. When I tap the little X to close it and instead am taken to your sales page, I'm truly annoyed 😠 I will never buy anything from you. Not then, not ever. Tell the platform you advertise on to Stop It.

Santa can inspire us: 'Nicholas secretly provided dowries for 3 impoverished girls whose father was unable to afford their marriages. By giving anonymously (traditionally under cover of night), he became a lasting model of discreet charity.' Daniel N. Gullotta on the medieval legend 🎅

Christianity passed through the Roman Empire. How we imagine the physical appearance of Jesus of Nazareth was one element influenced along the way. The Jesus we’ve inherited from centuries of Christian art is not accurate, but it is a powerful brand. A man with long hair parted in the middle and a long beard – often with fair skin, light brown hair and blue eyes – has become the widely accepted likeness.

Kate says... Low-key short stories that are both mundane and utterly fantastic. An Amazon Prime Video series based on amazing artwork and childhood fantasies that may be memories. Not your typical science fiction. Scifi can be more than monsters that want to eat us and interplanetary wars. I ran across this collection of images using familiar rural and small town backdrops populated by futuristic technology.

Mass shootings are rare in Australia. Firearm regulations (buyback program &tight licensing) keep mass shootings at about 1 per year. America suffers 400–650 mass shootings &over 46,000 gun violence deaths each year (per Your Local Epidemiologist) way beyond population difference #gun #violence

Aliens That Are Not Invaders? Dialing Earth, Interstellar Refugees Part 1 by Daniel Ellrick
Kate says... Alien refugees search for a new home, and Earth is the only planet their ancient sleeper-ship can reach. They need a champion to convince war-like humans to share their world. I love who they choose: a doctoral candidate working as a telescope technician in Hawaii. She seems likely to be overwhelmed, but won't tackle the job alone. I enjoyed the evolving characters who come to her aid.

Immigrants bring new ideas, weird food, different languages & that's unsettling. But there's more to learn. They boost the economy, lower crime rates, pay taxes. Popular or trending, esp in information silos, aren't always facts. What are the myths? skeptoid.com/episodes/983 #immigration
