Not quite the same but a while back a car nearly hit me on my bike — the car went through a red light without even slowing down, I had a green light. A stopped driver said “you need to be careful” to me 😡

An adult driver angry at a child they hit with their car.

Our car culture summed up in one video.

Police in Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary) say this driver hit a 17-year-old girl in a marked crosswalk, got out of the vehicle, and appeared to get upset at the teenager before driving away.

They released this video and are now trying to identify the driver.

That would be awesome. And honestly, it would be amazing to have something like this in Charlottesville, even if it’s imperfect.

Chicago Presbyterian Minister is fired upon by ICE and hit 7 times with pellets containing a chemical agent.

We are in a moment where we need to muster everything we have. And that means we ally ourselves with people who share our goals and mostly our values. The real violence that real people will experience demand this of us.

I have had to train myself out of statements like “I could kill him” because I don’t think threats of violence are ok. But I also don’t think that making that kind of conversational threat in a moment of frustration constitutes the kind of credible threat that requires this moral hard line

It was a shitty thing to say but scarcely a threat of political violence. Miyares is literally enacting state violence on us and will continue to. I would like a better candidate but I’ll take a mediocre one over one who happily collaborates with fascists.

I’d be thrilled to have this! It would be such an upgrade! And yet! It’s protected by cars with doors that can still swing into me.

Trump’s order to deploy Texas National Guard troops to Chicago is illegal, immoral, and must be stopped by the courts. ICE is already wreaking havoc in our communities. Let’s call this what it is: an invasion by out-of-state troops coming here only with the purpose of tormenting Chicagoans.

I have a conference in Niagara on the Lake Ontario, but flew into Buffalo. For $4 and two easy city bus rides, I had pleasant travels to the Rainbow bridge and waltzed across the border on foot. Bonus: THREE different Indian restaurants in a row (!) to choose from for lunch.

I would make a small edit. “Cars should not be sold.” #WarOnCars

After a few days in New York City, I’m beginning to feel that cars should not be sold with horns.

I thought I'd put the administration's proposed "compact" with universities in context, so I wrote the blog post below.

It's especially for journalists covering this story!

Many details about how the compact itself works and why the administration has retreated to this strategy.

There needs to be a version of the serenity prayer for the wisdom to know when it's time to die on your feet vs. live on your knees. It's easy to bluster on here about what we'd have done in Nazi Germany, but we're here now, and what we're doing is what we're doing. It's hard and scary to be brave.

Private prisons are bad, but they’re a small part of the system.

Mass incarceration is driven by public policy & spending — choices made by your elected officials.
Pie chart showing that only 8% of confined people are held in private prisons

It’s a core First Amendment principle. This is utterly lawless behavior, for which there will be no (short-term) consequences.

That he does it so casually, as they are walking away, in front of cameras.

Rightly confident in his impunity.
