Hello! It's lovely to see everyone here. For those who don't know me; I’m Katie Holten, an artist and dreamer. I like sharing the beauty I find in the world. I made a book called The Language of Trees. I'm learning to live with long COVID. I'm Irish, so I've a grá for blue skies. More trees please!
A human is walking along a country lane under a big blue sky. The landscape on either side of the little road is green with rolling stony mountains in the background. There is not a single tree. The human is a white lady is dressed in black. There are a few piggy white clouds in the sky coming in low over the mountains.

ME/CFS is a devastating condition that has long been denied, dismissed, psychologised and underdiagnosed. Research is at last starting to catch up with it, with glimmers of hope for those who have been left untreated for so long.
There's a huge BUT coming ...🧵

POTS is a form of #dysautonomia — a disorder of the autonomic nervous system. This branch of the nervous system regulates things we don’t consciously control, like heart rate. I have #POTS from long COVID. When I stand up, all the blood in my body falls with gravity. 🫠

Here, you can download the Irish Tree Alphabet poster (the original is in black and white), and the Irish Trees font (so you can type with trees), and a coloring book (prototype!)

Poster of a new Irish Tree Alphabet. The image shows the 26 letters of the English alphabet replaced by tree drawings. The trees are shown in their winter attire, bare of leaves so the structure of the tree is visible, except for evergreen trees which keep their leaves year round, like Ailm, or Scots Pine.

At the bottom is a line of vertical and horizontal twigs, illustrating the Ogham, which is thought to have been at least partially inspired or based on trees.

The project explores language ecosystems and incorporates Irish, English, and the medieval Ogham alphabet.

A small fire at the front of the bookshop was started last night after rubbish bags that were awaiting collection were set on fire. The guards don’t have reason at this time to believe it was a targeted attack. Thankfully the damage was limited and everyone is safe. We are open for business as usual

OMG! I love Books Upstairs, this is shocking. @booksupstairs.bsky.social is Dublin’s oldest independent bookstore, always encouraging the circulation of ideas. Luckily the damage seems to be mostly exterior. It could have been so much worse if the neighbours hadn’t intervened. 🙏

Nature and the environment permeate the language viscerally. Irish predates English by a millennium. Its early writing system, Ogham, written vertically as a series of lines and strokes, has an alphabet based on trees. The Irish language is a joy.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Illustration of a new Irish Tree Alphabet. Twenty-six trees represent each letter of the English alphabet. At the bottom of the image are lines representing the Ogham alphabet, horizontal and vertical lines, looking like simple trees.

The Irish Tree Alphabet draws trees from existing native as well as non-natives that are now calling Ireland home due to the changing climate.

The trees are drawn in ink with colored water pencil filling in the leaves and fruit.

The work is rooted in the medieval Ogham alphabet which was used to write the early Irish language. The characters or letters were called feda "trees", or nin "forking branches" due to their shape.

Each letter of the Latin alphabet is given a corresponding tree: A = Ailm (Scots Pine), B = Beith (Birch), B = Coll (Hazel), etc.

The tree drawings were turned into a font called Irish Trees.

Irish Tree Alphabet by Katie Holten was made for Visual Carlow in 2020. The font is available to download, so everyone can write with Irish Trees.
