Just heard someone say that if you aren't willing to get arrested or die at a protest you aren't serious about the cause and that's a) not true and b) not helpful

You don't need to have a death wish to fight for a better world, and anyone who says you do is throwing up a massive red flag

Modern religious discourse: The Old Testament God is all about smiting!

The Yahwist God in the Book of Job: Look, dude, I fed baby ravens, gave the ostrich those silly little wings, startled some horsies, sorry horsies, and killed a damn sea monster, A Sea Monster, what more do you want, my guy?

yes, exactly, a good martini should basically turn the drinker into a pre-world war one fop contemplating the bright future of the new century

I'm writing the newsletter this week on a question I think a lot of us have been pondering: When is it really time to leave the country?

The newsletter is our primary perk for Assigned Members, free to them but not available otherwise. It's the single best way for readers to support our reporting.

god yes, dirty martinis are a significantly worse than regular martinis

my favorite is the perfect martini (which has both sweet and dry vermouth) but I rarely order it because if the bartender isn't a cocktail person they think I'm asking for my drink to be "perfect", which is a no fun ask

Here I am in Slate, bravely coming out in favor of sweet, wet martinis (they gave this a more dramatic headline than intended but I stand by my feelings) slate.com/life/2025/10...

Glad Morris is on this issue. Obviously political violence in our society and the openness to it is a big issue. BUT I do think a lot of these polls, intentionally or not, have a way of amplifying very hypothetical questions. Or from a different perspective ... www.gelliottmorris.com/p/most-polls...
Why most polls overstate support for political violence
Misperceptions about the popularity of violence increase public support for it — but you can help change that.

The neoterics are so much fun! You really get a sense from Catullus' poetry that they were just a bunch of guys who enjoyed hanging out together and razzing each other (in incredibly filthy and personal ways). But also, Catullus could perfectly describe subtle and evanescent feelings of affection.

I went through a youthful obsession with the poetry of Catullus, so my username is the digital equivalent of getting a somewhat disreputable tattoo in your teens

I still really like Catullus' poetry, mind you

oh, and KTT are my initials, which is how I got from Catullus to Kattullus

a couple of years ago I was at a music festival and I had a gap in my schedule so I decided to take a chance on an artist who I'd never heard of and knew nothing about, other than the genre listed on the schedule was "experimental"

I left that music festival a fan of Claire Rousay

it's rare for me to receive an invitation to fancy dinner parties, but I was invited to one tomorrow which I was really looking forward to

this evening I started to feel really under the weather

I have a fever of 39 degrees Celsius (or in Fahrenheit: fucking lots)

no fancy dinner for me tomorrow

Also, the T-34 was a much better tank than anything produced by Germany or Japan (or the US or Britain, for that matter).

All that said, I think his bigger point is true, the Germans didn’t have a marked technological disadvantage.

Ooh, of course there’s a map!

A part of me kinda wants to tally up the population numbers to see who comes ahead. At first glance, I think the dots are ahead of the periods, but I’m not sure.
