"Hey Inoue-san, it's Ohira-san's seisaku. Do you want in on his Star Wars short?"
"Wow, sure!"
"Thanks! I'll send you the boards for the part he had in mind"
"Haha, at least Ohira-san's not gonna make me draw horses again, right? Nahhh, that's an old joke by now, I'm sure he doesn't even re-

This is what I had to say about him way back in 2020 in my video about the fight between Shouko and Shouya in Koe no Katachi. You can add "instrument sakkan" and "enshutsu+econte for City EP05 (That One)" to that list of experiences. Can't wait to see his perspective from the director's desk.

Or maybe 633 Squadron, but I already learned the crossover audience for that joke was vanishingly small when Izetta did a 633 Squadron bit. Admittedly most people in my circle were smart enough to have dropped Izetta by then.
Man I wanted that cartoon to be good.
It wasn't.

Tangentially, someone brought an absolute shitton of microscale Star Trek ships to the local Lego con. They're all pretty simple, almost what we'd call "tablescrap," and dead easy to reverse engineer

Reminder that this is now happening next Saturday at 13:00 EDT, not tomorrow.
Until then, let's appreciate possibly the first animated explosion from Winsor McCay's Sinking of the Lusitania.

It appears to be an illustration by Snowmi for an artbook they released at Comiket 87.

"Wow, nice zincite! Where did you find it?"
"Oh, the kids were helping with our field work and we found an abandoned factory."
"You…what?"
"Yeah, it was inside a segment of chimney or something."
"…did y-"
"Imari-san and I couldn't fit, but Seto-san was just small enough! She was so proud!"

None of this even seems unusual for bishoujo, right? This is pretty much how they'd been shaded for the past decade minus the highlights.
Someday I may put a presentation together on the evolution of bishoujo in animation, but I have a lot to learn. Also is this really a topic for me?

I found this because I was looking at Sadamoto's character designs. Influential as he is, I'd never actually inspected any of his settei. This lengthy page on how to draw shadows on Nadia's face while keeping her cute is also interesting because it's just…*not* how modern settei work

Fun note from Maeda Mahiro on this sheet from the Nadia settei telling animators they should draw the Nautilus to look cool regardless of whether it follows the three-view planform (fig.2)
This kind of deformation broadly mimics short lens photography, but even so, there's some cheating

This guy seems familiar. It's a proper kit – you can see the wing ribs under the covering – but it's not one of the ancient Guillow's kits most American hobby shops sell.
What are Japanese indoor freeflight model plane otaku like? Seems like an easier hobby for urban Japan than model rocketry
