My grandpa was a B-26 flight engineer with the 38th Repair Squadron at Capodichino. He told me once how he'd been grabbed to pinch-hit a ferry flight for a downed B-24 that'd been duct-taped together in a pasture near Pompeii. He got a splendid view of it that day, and boy he wished he didn't
