Happy Human Rights Day! The UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 75 years ago today, a monumental achievement that many don't know about. Earlier this year, I gave a talk at TEDxUGA about why I think human rights should be more important in our daily lives. You can check it out here.

Putting numbers to vibes. The confluence of these levels of global geopolitical risk and global trade policy uncertainty hasn't been seen in at least 40 years (as far back as both series go).
Scatterplot of the geopolitical risk index and trade policy uncertainty index, where higher values indicate greater instability. 2025 stands out for extreme trade policy uncertainty and very high levels of geopolitical risk, approaching/surpassing that during the breakup of the Soviet Union and the aftermath of 9/11.

I’ve seen a lot of trans folks get outraged at Kamala Harris over this news article

A brief thread on why I would really suggest *reading* the outrage bait posted about our community by major media platforms before hitting “post” on social media

Here we go… 🧵
Kamala Harris cites concerns about trans athletes in her book
The Trump campaign attacked Harris over her positions on transgender rights. She says they were misconstrued.

I think I messed up entering the ALT text, so for reference, the GIF is Brennan Lee Mulligan in character as George RR Martin on Make Some Noise explaining why we'll never get The Winds of Winter: "I don't know, have you ever tried to write? It's the saddest, hardest, worst thing in the world."

I'm on research leave from teaching this semester (still have admin duties for GLOBIS), and it's great. I'm really getting a lot done. At the same time, @brennanleemulligan.bsky.social (as GRRM) wasn't completely wrong about this.

I was very honored to receive the Hendrix College Humanitarian Award back in April. Several people asked for the text from my speech, and I've finally posted it. TLDR: While it feels like the world is pushing the other direction, those who care about human rights still have the tools to push back.

The value of college, both at the individual and societal level, is that it creates more enlightened, thoughtful, and socially productive people. Education isn't a means to an end, it's an end in itself. The view that education is a job training program is both misguided and anti-intellectual.

among the things we apparently need to do a better job of going forward - as a society, it seems - is communicating the basic conceit of what learning is and why we value it. a problem that we in higher ed share with our K-12 colleagues
