I like bird dogs, bicycles, and singing.
Yesterday I was a blob and didn't ride my bike at all or feel like doing much of anything. I went to bed early, set no alarm, and woke naturally but I also started coughing in the night. No surprise, my #Ouraring says that my temperature is elevated 0.3C among other things. 1/5

Not much going on here. J and I both had #Zwift races. I got🥉and he got 5th. Wanted the W but my legs are pretty rubbish after🥈last night. We both have Advent calendars. Mine is chocolate. His has a bread board. Unrelated, he baked actual bread on Sunday and prepped to bake me another pumpkin pie.

Staying at home in Illinois... Doot doot doot, looking out my front door...

Today we volunteered in the wind & snow at Morrissey #Parkrun (which had 10 parkrunners plus the tailwalker), then helped fix all the chairs with loose (but not cracked - those need more work) legs at the Chapel. 1/2

All is well. J got a buck. My squad has now won both #ZRL races this round. Paks & Emmie are happy but miss J. Post-hunting, he's helped hang drywall and install a door in the polebarn at the dome. The plants seem happy indoors (hibiscus & cactus blooming). Glad the snow melted. I wasn't ready.

Not much going on here. Training for real. Racing bikes and winning. Glad for some hopeful world developments. Open windows and snuggling doggos. A furloughed friend may help me lay down a few tracks this week yet. J is getting fitter and doing well too. He's baking me cookies later.

I'm finally (finally?!) feeling motivated about training, though still not for any particular thing. Just trying to get back into and stay within the green. I had some heart rate monitor issues that led to stopping during my duathlon ride but *still* got an FTP increase notification. Getting fitter.

Today in weird observations: I had a dance party in the kitchen while loading the dishwasher and paying bills. I always listen to music for these activities, why the joyful movement today? It's the socks. Barefoot summer is great but you can't slide and spin until it's cold. Also, this happened.

They're not spoiled at all.

Also, I won my first #Zwift race in a while last night. It felt good. My squad had a rider with serious connection issues throughout the race finish near the back but we still got 🥉 and would definitely have won if she had even been middle of the pack.

The NYT got it better but didn't they mean "proponent" rather than "exponent?" Is a "vocal exponent" even a thing?

I've been racing on #Zwift since 2020 and a lot of my best numbers have come from racing for ATP. Today I stumbled upon this, which apparently includes all my bests. It's both nice that I'm close in some ways to where I was before breaking my leg but also note the yawning gaps. So close but so far.

Looks pretty good!

Trying Melissa Clark's Red Lentil Soup recipe. I've never made lentils before - I've always been a bit intimidated - but this looks hopefully simple enough. Weirdly, I've mostly learned how to cook from the #NYT, starting 20 years ago with Mark Bittman's The Minimalist vlogs. So far so good.

Happy World Car-Free Day! Ride your bike, take the bus, walk, or like me, work from home.

I biked to church and my volunteer shift at The Bike Project yesterday but don't have any plans today. I'll work, we'll likely take the dogs for a walk, and I may wash bedding and hang it to dry in the sun.

I got 150 minutes of Zwifting in, over half of which was perfect Metabolic Training. Jesse rode a bike to volunteer at Parkrun and brought me a croque monsieur. We drove to a nearby town to get covid & flu vaccines and then went to a lovely party where the Marching Illini Mini Band played. Good day.

It's a perfect 70° out here. I've had my three cups of coffee and collagen protein powder and additional raw cocoa. I'm supposed to leave my lounger, go to my basement, and #Zwift for like 3 hours. Dang do I not want to do that. Sadly, I am running out of time. 4.5h til we must leave for vaccines.

I would not have thought of that and it's clearly good advice. It asked if I wanted more detail and gave the second instructions. I hadn't expected to derive so much utility from my monthly #Oura ring payment. I kind of love having a health/fitness/performance advisor who already knows my stats. 3/3
September 13, 2025 at 2:46 PM
It's given me interval pacing for running (since I'm not really a runner), clothing suggestions for riding in colder weather when I haven't been out in a while, and today, after I told it my plan for rest and the hope for tomorrow, it suggested a gentle vocal warmup today and gave specifics. 2/

My main plan for today is that I need to get over this cold so I can go to church and sing (while wearing a mask) in the choir tomorrow. I slept poorly last night and my #Oura ring noticed. It includes an AI advisor that's given me good suggestions on quite a few health and sports-related topics. 1/

I had attributed the sluggishness to melancholy from too much mental load. In addition to usual stuff, adding tracking food, sobriety, sleeping perfectly, and taking care of myself, all at once, is a lot. But taking care of myself is maybe paying off and I don't feel sick. 15 days. Hope it sticks.
September 9, 2025 at 3:09 PM
My spouse is sick for a second day. I can barely hear him and what I can hear sounds like someone filled his throat with gravel and then filled the gaps with sand. Today my Oura ring noted my HR is a bit elevated. Recently I've felt sluggish and blown my nose a few times but am otherwise fine.

We finished! We met all our goals and PRd our respective distances (10k for him, and 5k for me - I am not much of a runner).
September 6, 2025 at 4:15 PM
Waiting in the warm truck for a few more minutes before J's first 10k and my first official 5k in a long time. Yes, the sweatshirts have to come off when we get out. It's actually perfect weather for running after we get moving - truck says 52°F now.

And look at that: Of course I skipped right over rehab. That's probably because I'm not sure of anything, whether it's for me or not, a forever thing or a for now thing, for weight loss or health or actual sobriety or all of the above. It's been 10 days since my last drink. Dunno what it means. 7/7

There is a lot we could stand to clean up, and we also probably need to take the dogs on more walks. They get a lot of exercise playing with each other, but Paks is getting older and Emmie's nail quicks are long and may shorten with more walking on pavement. More hiking would be good, too. 5/

We also have a backlog of yardwork. Our home insurer this time is saying we have to prove to them we've cleaned up our beds or they'll cancel us because we're "inviting crime" and "high risk." State Farm lost a lot in the last two years and is cutting losses but that's still a lot of work. 4/
