A quietly beautiful film. Catch this one while you have the chance
Isabel Sandoval’s masterful LINGUA FRANCA leaves Netflix this Sunday. One of the masterpieces of the streaming era. Desire and pleasure, joy and terror, connection and isolation, all sublimely composed and navigated as a gentle, gradual, and sensual articulation of self. It’s genuinely spellbinding.

18-29s are too young to have lived through the DVD era, but I really do think easy access to subtitles on DVDs standardized the practice, then streaming made it completely normal. It makes sense that kids raised in the streaming era would default to subtitles!
My guess is that having subtitles on helps engage people who’ve grown up in a multi-screen world and serves to focus their attention on one screen.
