Tory MP who quit in gambling row may join Reform Extract: A former Tory MP who was forced to quit after offering to lobby for gambling investors in return for payment of up to £2,000 a day is considering joining Reform UK, The Times has been told. Scott Benton was forced to resign last year after being exposed by a Times in-vestigation. He was filmed telling undercover reporters posing as gambling industry investors that he could lobby ministers and leak a confidential document. Local sources said Benton was now considering standing for Reform in the constituency of Blackpool North & Fleetwood at the next election. Benton declined to comment. A Reform source insisted Benton would be banned from standing as a candidate if he formally applied, while a Tory source said: "We wish Scott Benton well in his new party." His defection could prove controversial and senior figures in Reform are increasingly concerned by the mass recruitment of "Tory retreads". A total of 22 former Conservative MPs have already joined Reform, leading to increasing tensions in Nigel Farage's party. There are concerns within Reform that it will lose its status as an antiestablishment insurgent force if a large chunk of the party consists of former Tory MPs. The latest defector yesterday was Ben Bradley, who will take up a role as the party's "head of local government action". Bradley lost his Mansfield seat at the 2024 election, having first won the constituency in 2017. He was also leader of Nottinghamshire county council from 2021 until last year. Farage said yesterday that Reform "will not become the Conservative Party 2.0" but added that his party's "biggest weakness is a lack of experience". "We need people with experience of politics, experience of life, experience of management, who've been there before," he told a press conference. "Scott Benton is a dirty rotten scoundrel," says Dale Dodwell, the manager of the tattoo parlour Monsters Ink. "He keeps putting up pictures of him eating loads of food. What about the homeless? All good for you because you have loads of money." Dodwell's words symbolise the feeling that many local people have given up on politics. On 2 May, a byelection will take place to replace Benton, who on Monday evening resigned as the Conservative MP for Blackpool South. It presents another political headache for Rishi Sunak before an election that polls suggest will be won by Labour. Benton was caught last year by undercover reporters for the Times posing on behalf of a fake investment fund saying he would lobby ministers on behalf of the gambling industry and leak a confidential policy for up to £4,000 a month. The starkest of warnings.

If you vote for Farage, what does that make you? Because the rest of us are definitely asking.
Because if he has not changed, then every vote for Nigel Farage is not a protest. It is permission. It hands real power to a man whose teenage cruelty looks less like a youthful phase and more like a blueprint. This country is far from perfect, but it is worth fighting for. It is better than the politics Farage offers, where every problem is reduced to a question of who can be blamed, where your neighbour becomes your enemy, and where people who look or sound different are turned into targets. Once a politics of hatred takes root at the top, a country does not easily come back from it. We have seen, in other times and other places, how quickly democratic norms can erode when leaders normalise contempt and cruelty. You know this in your gut. We all do.

REFORM CLUB "REFORM UK's •Britannia card' idea looks more like a sales pitch to potential donors than serious fiscal policy," said Eye 1653 when Nigel Farage unveiled it in July. And so it now seems. The plan to re-introduce non-dom tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy who are resident in the UK but have allegiance, assets and income abroad is drawing them to the party like bees to a honeypot. The latest release of big party donors shows the party's largest ever donor, crypto investor Christopher Harborne, making a transformational £9m donation in August. This follows the £10m he gave in 2019 and 2020, when the Eye revealed his network of offshore companies and a dual Thai identity, Chakrit Sakunkrit. With extensive offshore interests, Harborne might stand to benefit from a Britannia card. He must currently be UK tax resident (as opposed to just domiciled) to be an eligible donor at this level - although Reform didn't respond to the Eye's request for confirmation of this, and declarations at Companies House give his residence as Thailand. He would also of course benefit from Farage's love-in with crypto - shown by his recent plugging of the digital token Tether, in which Harborne has a big stake, and his arguing for far more relaxed regulation of the crypto world. Letters in the Times - expressing disgust at anti-immigrant racism and the “Trump doctrine”- a meddling, authoritarian plan to undermine European democracies in order to have us all at the mercy of his USA or Putin’s Russia.

American fears about 'civilisational erasure' 2 of 5 letters - all similar in opinion Sir, The Trump administration has officially declared that demographic change will make Europe unrecognisable, as Melanie Phillips notes (Trump is calling for Europe to save itself", Dee 9). Yet it is President Trumps dystopian world view that is unrecognisable for most democrats across Europe, as the transatlantic alliance has done so much to shape the world in which we live. As Phillips herself points out, the central irony of the new Trump doctrine is that it combines a commitment to regime change among democratically elected governments in Europe with an entirely hands-off approach to co-existence with its authoritarian allies in Vladimir Putins Kremlin. Britain and Europe will have to take more responsibility for peace, prosperity and democracy while this new turn in US politics lasts. We can take some solace in the fact that this offer to import the Trump and Vance doctrine into our own politics is something we will get to decide for ourselves at the ballot box. Sunder Katwala Director, British Future Sir, I find the fixation on migration, particularly Muslim migration, troubling on many levels. To start with, Muslim birthrates will decline with increased European education; educating women achieves that. Second, this is not the first time a Middle Eastern religion has travelled west: Christianity did it, with levels of resentment along the way. In these (one hopes) more enlightened times, religion will hold less sway than it did then. I cannot help but feel that this current attitude stems from a rather pathetic minority of "white" supremacists whose misplaced and erroneous superiority is under threat; hence the talk of "civilisational erasure" and other nonsense.
