Don't want to tell anyone how to do their job, but if you want to attack Rachel Reeves, there's quite a lot of really good ammunition from this century, indeed from the last month, right there on the table.

Juries are not perfect.

Many of the worst miscarriages of justice have followed jury trials.

But the merit of juries is not so much the power they have, but the power they prevent others from having.

They mean a judge cannot just nod-along with prosecution evidence and give a guilty verdict.

I don’t agree that ‘illegal migration’ is causing huge divides here in the UK.

The lack of effective action to discourage or prevent it, ineffective systems to process cases and safeguard migrants and citizens alike: those are the problems. They’re policy issues.

Reading in the Guardian about the ongoing travails of Ms K Badenoch, a phrase jumped out: “At -22 points, she is less popular than Jenrick (-16) and Mel Stride (-21), according to Ipsos Mori.”

Politics, the funny old game you win by being *slightly* less wildly unpopular than your colleagues.

If the Chancellor is still hunting infrastructure opps for high “social capital” returns, to push some good news in sweetening the budget pill: upgrading Ebbsfleet and Ashford Int. for the EU EES, unlocking for international services, is a slam-dunk. www.kentonline.co.uk/ashford/news...

Very important story with national, as well as local, implications.
Despite years of underfunding by successive governments, BCC’s own accounts now show estimates relied on for its Section 114 “bankruptcy” were hugely inaccurate, swingeing cuts now enacted unnecessary. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

On the Reeves licensing thing: compliant single-property owners would, it seems, usually be let off with a warning letter by the local authority. For a full mea culpa, Reeves could consider refunding 12 months rent to her tenants as they might claim under an RRO (even if order might not be granted)

The Chagos situation provides another example of failure to plan for outcomes you don’t want: not only were the wishes of Chagossians ignored, so were their options and reactions to their homeland being given away.

The reason this is a ‘golden rule’ is it’s an excuse to cut welfare spending to fund tax cuts, in order to cross our palms with silver, in exchange for golden tickets that we would agree to post into ballot boxes.
Other rules available: cut unnecessary expenditure solely to reduce deficit.
