If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.

They detained an American citizen, questioned him about his beliefs and criticisms of Trump. This could be any of us who have public opinions the administration doesn't like.
“I could explain Hasan Piker’s politics to you, but that’s entirely irrelevant. The bold, all caps, underlined point is that a high profile, US-born American citizen was detained on Sunday by ICE for, it would seem, the crime of speech.”
Hasan Piker’s ICE detainment is a cautionary tale for multiple reasons
The progressive Twitch star's account of his experience shows unchecked power, and what *not* to do if detained.

The richest man in the world spent more money than most of us will see in our lifetimes to lose a state Supreme Court race by 10 points.

And the fact his $25 million was a drop in the bucket compared to what he's spent on other elections is exactly why we must overturn Citizens United.

i honestly have never seen a political leader so thoroughly destroy their credibility so quickly and, on the other side, it is abundantly clear that if anyone can claim a genuine leadership of large parts of the democratic party, it is AOC.
Folks is it good when your own party's leadership in the House is dropping "listen to the women" and MLK quotes on you while swing state members of your caucus are talking about new leadership

Today would be yet another good day for university presidents to loudly, collectively, & publicly start defending our institutions & industry. The silence is deafening & frankly, incomprehensible. What exactly are you waiting for? How many Columbias, Maines, & Johns Hopkins will it take?
The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

Higher ed needs a national strike.

Cutting NIH to a 15% indirect cost rate will devastate American universities and medical programs in absurd ways. It’s not even legal what’s happening and NIH is issuing guidance anyway.

Hear me out —

If parents call colleges freaked about their FAFSA data being leaked, schools may have to issue statements — which would reach a whole lot more families about how warped this is.

Organizing isn’t always calling electeds. Sometimes it’s just calling people with a bigger megaphone.
