as a complete side-note: as someone who has a sizeable digital games library but basically no digital movie library, I feel like one of the problems there is there has never been a solid Steam equivalent, with the earned trust and goodwill

The honest truth is that another platform could very much build up and take on Steam. But nobody has even really attempted it.

Because the point hasn't been to make a platform that can compete with Steam. The point has been to make a platform that game-buyers may use regardless.

These other companies want to collect rents from game-buyers too, and Steam is MONOPOLIZING THEM.

The whole debate about Steam charging companies too much was shadowboxing about this. Publishers want more of the money and have 0 interest in how good of a platform gamers are using.
November 4, 2025 at 4:42 PM
"Steam is a monopoly!" isn't coming from the perspective of game consumers. It's coming from publishers!

If you treat game-buyers as the product and publishers as the customers, the logic makes more sense. Steam is monopolizing all these customers, by treating them too well!

That's the problem.

GOG is an exception, sure, but they're like the nice little indie theater showing cool arthouse movies. They have their fans, but most folks aren't motivated by GOG's core appeal.

In other words, 72% don't know what a monopoly is.
More than half of developers feel they rely too heavily on Steam to distribute their games, with 72% believing the platform has a monopoly on the PC games market

The important thing is that the bluesky consensus needs to be wrong, and he needs to be the Enlightened Genius who cuts through the crap and shows the truth: that we need to.. uhhh.. do things.. uhh.. that win....???

Some days that will mean supporting Moderates. Some days that will be claiming that Moderates aren't Moderates, and true Moderates are some secret third thing. Some days he'll attack bluesky for being too radical, but others he'll attack it for caring too much about Nazi tattoos.
