Probably the single most effective thing any oligarch ever did to help entrench Republican Party political power was Mark Zuckerberg making a large investment in FWD.us to promote soft on crime and lax immigration policies.

their Neo Geo series is also good, though not quite as exotic IMO

Thinking on this more, I think we need to re-arrange our thinking to get on the "Steam is a monopoly!" wavelength.

Is Steam the only place to buy PC games? Not even close. So what are they monopolizing?

They're monopolizing.. the attention and interests of game-buyers
It's not so much a monopoly as the only game in town. Imagine if you had one really nice movie theater in your town, and 3-4 others that didn't have seats, smelled like shit, and cost about the same amount. But they occasionally had free showings.

The alternatives are just terrible.
More than half of developers feel they rely too heavily on Steam to distribute their games, with 72% believing the platform has a monopoly on the PC games market

I'm starting to feel like Matt Yglesias' big thing is just pissing off bluesky. He doesn't have an argument. He doesn't have policy positions to support anymore. He just jumps from ridiculous stance to ridiculous stance to justify whatever gets some hate on bluesky.
The goalposts keep shifting here! First it was about blue dogs vs the squad. I showed that’s too simplistic, so then “moderation” was presidential candidates taking moderate issue positions. Now moderation is just allowing the party to have different regional brands?

Pick an argument!!
I also think Sherill illustrates the need to define terms here — to me the need for moderation is not about supporting mainstream Dems like her versus leftists like Mamdani, it’s about the fact that the national party needs to ditch commitments both factions share.

I'm sure a Democrat running against a Republican is totally comparable to a Democrat running against... a Democrat with apparent support from leading Democrats
yeah why might it be harder for someone to break 50% in a three-way race versus a two-way race. obviously it has something to do with ideology.

We should never forget that this synagogue was targeted specifically because of their work with HIAS on refugee rights. Seven years later, we should honor their legacy by fighting antisemitism, but also by continuing to do the work of supporting refugee resettlement and migrant rights.
Seven years ago today, 11 Jewish people were murdered at the Tree of Life Congregation, a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In their names, we will continue to stand up against hate, bigotry and the rise in antisemitism taking place around the country. May their memories be for a blessing.

Establishment Democrats spent a full year complaining the Left forced them to be “woke.”

But then a left populist, Graham Platner, threatened to win in Maine, so they went right back to trying to cancel someone over old internet posts.

boy is that true. in 2022-3, burrito taxis going up got about ten thousand times more attention online than the fact that it was the best labor market for low income workers in like 60 years
i will note again that there is a really unhealthy, unpleasant and strong current of consumerism that runs through the left in a way that genuinely didn’t used to be true
The responses this post is getting, combined with the animating grievances of large swathes of politics, has convinced me we need a kind of society wide PSA about how Buying Things Is Optional.
